Tyler Wells: Breaking News

The Orioles optioned Wells to Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday. Wells owns a 3.44 ERA and 1.20 WHIP through 18.1 innings this season, but the O's will send him to the minors as they make room on the active roster for Dietrich Enns' (foot) return from the injured list and Nick Raquet's promotion from Triple-A. Wells will likely be welcomed back to Baltimore's bullpen when the team needs a fresh arm.

Wells struck out the only batter he faced Thursday in a 4-2 loss to the Guardians. Wells missed the majority of 2024 and 2025 due to an elbow injury, starting seven big-league games over those two years. The 31-year-old righty excelled in four September starts to end last season, posting a 2.91 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB across 21.2 innings, and the expectation was that Wells would be a part of the Orioles' rotation to kick off 2026. Instead, he's exclusively been used as a relief option, working 11 innings in nine appearances with a 4.91 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB while picking up four holds.

Orioles manager Craig Albernaz confirmed Wednesday that Wells will be used as a reliever at the beginning of the season, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. President of baseball operations Mike Elias said as camp opened that Wells would be built up as a starting pitcher, but since then the club tipped its hand in regards to Wells' role by using the righty in one-inning stints. Wells has looked sharp in Grapefruit League action, yielding just one hit with a 5:0 K:BB over three scoreless frames. He could be ticketed for a high-leverage bullpen role from the right side while Andrew Kittredge (shoulder) is out.
