The Carolina Panthers have acquired defensive end Jared Allen from the Chicago Bears in a trade, pending a physical examination.

Allen, a five-time Pro Bowler and four-time All Pro selection, has 134 career sacks, which ranks ninth all-time. In 2011, he recorded 22 sacks, good for second most in league history.

Allen is perhaps best known for his six years with the Minnesota Vikings from 2008-2013. He joined the Bears in 2014.

The fun-loving Allen proposed to his wife of five years in 2010. In a rather unusual manuever, he did it in his truck before leaving on a hunting trip.

The couple also has two daughters.


2. The Bears Will Pay Most of Jared Allen’s 2015 Salary

The Panthers get Allen and don’t have to pay much of his 2015 salary.

Allen signed a 4-year, $32,000,000 contract with the Chicago Bears, including $15,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $8,000,000. In 2015, Allen will earn a base salary of $823,529. Allen has a cap hit of $823,529 while his dead money value is $823,529.

The Bears will have paid Allen $11.676 million this year for three games worth of work that resulted in 4 tackles. The Panthers will only pay Allen slightly over $823,000 for the remainder of the season.


3. Jared Allen Had 22 Sacks in 2011

The mark of 22 sacks was good for tying Allen at second place on the NFL single-season sacks list, behind Michael Strahan’s 22 ½ sacks.

The Vikings finished 3-13 in 2011, so Allen was practically the lone bright spot that year.


4. Jared Allen was Drafted by the Chiefs with the 126th pick in 2004

Allen was drafted by the Chiefs with the 126th pick in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft.

Allen under-performed fairly drastically in the NFL Combine’s bench press, but still spent four years in Kansas City before moving onto Minnesota for six years and then Chicago for a little over a year.


5. Allen wrote is an Avid Hunter and Wrote a Cookbook in 2011

Allen is a passionate hunter, and goes often to hunt wild game. He learned to hunt at an early age.

He even wrote a book about hunting and cooking one’s kill back in 2011.
