Rory McIlroy is preparing for one of the biggest tournaments remaining on his 2026 schedule, but an ominous security warning has cast an unusual shadow over the upcoming event.

The six-time major champion is scheduled to compete in the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship beginning November 5, as he continues his pursuit of another Race to Dubai title. However, the tournament’s preparations have become increasingly complicated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Several prominent golfers have already decided against participating. Now, players arriving in Abu Dhabi have received instructions explaining how to respond if an emergency arises during the competition.

McIlroy has maintained his commitment to playing in the United Arab Emirates.

But the newly circulated notice is a reminder of the unusual circumstances surrounding this year’s DP World Tour playoffs.

Rory McIlroy’s Next Tournament Issues Emergency Evacuation Instructions

According to Golf Channel’s November 2 report, participants at Yas Links received a bulletin titled “Mobile Phone Alerts & Emergency Procedures.”

The instructions explain that if United Arab Emirates authorities issue a public emergency notification during the tournament, play will be suspended immediately.

A prolonged blast of the course’s air horns would signal the suspension, after which players and caddies would be required to follow established evacuation routes to the clubhouse.

Tournament officials would then communicate further instructions, including updates through the players’ online portal.

Anyone receiving an alert away from the golf course is directed to follow local authorities’ guidance.

The notice was also highlighted in a November 2 Front Office Sports report, which included comments from a DP World Tour spokesperson.

The spokesperson explained that the organization has plans in place for every aspect of its tournaments, including the events scheduled in the Middle East.

Importantly, the procedures are precautionary. There has been no confirmed emergency requiring players to evacuate Yas Links, and the tournament remains scheduled to proceed.

Several Golf Stars Skip Abu Dhabi as McIlroy Stands Firm

McIlroy is among the biggest names continuing with plans to compete, but several notable players have decided against making the trip.

According to Golf Channel, 11 eligible players are missing the Abu Dhabi Championship, compared with just four the previous year.

The absentees include Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Robert MacIntyre, Ludvig Aberg and Ryan Fox, although not every player’s decision has been attributed to security concerns.

Fitzpatrick previously expressed discomfort about traveling to the region, while other golfers have cited different personal or scheduling considerations.

McIlroy has taken a different position.

Speaking at the BMW PGA Championship in September, the Northern Irishman expressed confidence in local officials’ ability to determine whether holding the tournaments was safe.

He also spoke positively about his experiences in the Middle East and his desire to return.

The stakes remain significant for McIlroy, who enters Abu Dhabi third in the Race to Dubai standings behind Eugenio Chacarra and Patrick Reed.

The Abu Dhabi Championship features a $9 million purse and serves as the first of two season-ending DP World Tour playoff events. The final tournament is scheduled for November 12–15 in Dubai.

McIlroy is pursuing an eighth Race to Dubai title, which would match Colin Montgomerie’s record.

For now, the tournament is going ahead as planned, with McIlroy and his fellow competitors navigating an atmosphere far different from an ordinary championship week.
