Team USA pulled off a dramatic 5-3 win over Mexico on March 9 in the World Baseball Classic. The difference in the game was a three-run home run hit by Boston Red Sox star outfielder Roman Anthony.
Mexico rallied for three runs late, but Anthony’s home run made the lead stand up as the Americans won their third game. Following the big win, Anthony’s former teammate Alex Bregman, now with the Chicago Cubs, had some high praise for his friend.
“Roman’s like a brother to me,” Bregman said. “I loved playing with him last year. He is, hands down going to be a superstar in this game. Offensively it’s electric. It’s power from line-to-line. The plate discipline is crazy. He’s a really good defender as well, runs the bases well, he’s a smart player. He’s not afraid to fail, and that’s difficult for a lot of young players in this game. He’s not scared, he’s ready to get after it and he’s going to be one of the best players in the game for a long time.”

This is some high praise coming from a veteran player like Bregman, and he only had the chance to play with Anthony for a small chunk of the 2025 season while he was in Boston. But he clearly likes what he has seen from his former teammate so far, and there is a lot to like.
Anthony made his Major League debut late last season and helped guide the Red Sox to their first postseason berth since 2021. Bregman left for the Cubs this offseason, but the two have a chance to play together on Team USA.
Obviously, Anthony hasn’t been in the major leagues for very long, but he is a very exciting young player. Bregman has been around for several years and knows a superstar when he sees one, having played with the likes of Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Kyle Tucker, Justin Verlander and Rafael Devers.
But there is a lot for Red Sox fans to be excited about with Anthony. He is still a young player that has a lot of potential and several years to continue to become a better player.
Bregman may not be his teammate anymore, but he saw enough of Anthony to know what kind of player he has the potential to become in the next few years. The Red Sox too, will benefit from having Anthony in their lineup on a daily basis, even after the loss of Bregman.
The Future Is Bright
The future is certainly bright for Anthony, and Team USA got a glimpse into that future when he hit his clutch home run against Mexico in the WBC. Bregman has seen it firsthand and has a good idea of what the future holds for his former teammate.
It will certainly be interesting to see where Anthony is headed as he starts to gain more experience as a major league player. If Bregman’s prediction is true, then the baseball world is in for a treat.
