Roman Anthony: Breaking News

The Red Sox placed Anthony (wrist) on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to Tuesday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. The Red Sox were holding out hope that Anthony would be able to avoid a trip to the IL after he sprained his wrist during Monday's game, but the team didn't like the idea of playing with a short bench for another few days. The 21-year-old will be eligible to return to the lineup May 15. Until then, Masataka Yoshida figures to continue benefitting from additional starts at DH.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said Thursday that Anthony (wrist) will be placed on the 10-day injured list, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports. Anthony hasn't played since suffering a sprained right wrist in Monday's game versus the Tigers. The injury hasn't gotten worse, but Anthony wasn't going to be able to play for at least a few more days, and the Red Sox didn't want to continue playing a man short. He will have a chance to be activated when first eligible late next week, though that possibility should become clearer over the next few days. Masataka Yoshida will continue to get increased reps at designated hitter while Anthony is shelved.

Anthony (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rays. Anthony will miss a third straight start as he continues to recover from a sprained right wrist. The Red Sox have been optimistic that Anthony can avoid the injured list, but the more this drags out, the likelier an IL stint becomes. Masataka Yoshida is grabbing another start at designated hitter Thursday.
