The Atlanta Braves just beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-game series that took place over the weekend.

After being tied going into Sunday afternoon’s game, Atlanta picked up a 7-2 win over Los Angeles in Dodger Stadium to take the series over the back-to-back World Champs. It’s a huge series win for Atlanta, but they did receive some negative injury news after the game on Sunday regarding catcher Sean Murphy, who appeared to hurt his hand after a catcher’s interference play.

Braves manager Walt Weiss was asked after the game on Sunday after Sean Murphy, and reporter Mark Bowman indicates that there won’t be a clear answer until Tuesday.

Bowman wrote (on May 10):

“The Braves said they won’t have an update on Sean Murphy’s hand/fingers until Tuesday”

“Sean Murphy had an X-ray of a finger that was clipped on the catcher’s interference. Weiss felt like he would be fine”

Chad Bishop also noted:

“Couple injury updates from Walt Weiss postgame: Eli White in concussion protocol; Sean Murphy left after getting hit on the hand/wrist on the catcher’s interference”

It’s not a mandatory seven-day IL stint (yet) for Eli White, but there will likely be more development on that later in the week.

As for Sean Murphy, he recently returned from the IL and made his season debut four games ago. Now, it could be another injury scare for Murphy, who has been limited in recent years.

Sean Murphy’s Time with Braves

Sean Murphy joined the Atlanta Braves before the 2023 season. The Braves inked him to a six-year, $73 million contract upon arrival, which looked like it could pay off after the first season when Sean Murphy was an All-Star.

However, since then, Murphy has failed to appear in more than 100 games (2024, 2025) and has also hit below .200 in both seasons. He has power upside for a catcher, but Drake Baldwin is now the Braves starter, so Murphy has to find playing time with so many Atlanta players making a case to be in the lineup.

In 277 games played with the Braves, Murphy has an average of .218 with 47 home runs and 39 doubles. In 11 at-bats this season, Murphy has just one hit and six strikeouts. He recently returned from a hip problem that kept him sidelined to start the season and at the end of 2025.

It’s a situation to watch for sure, and Murphy might already be on thin ice in terms of playing time.
