Ahead of the clash, the organization announced (via X) that it has released 28-year-old pitcher Joe La Sorsa.

La Sorsa was selected 548th overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 18th round of the 2019 MLB draft. He went on to make his debut on May 29, 2023, with the franchise.

Shortly after, he found himself landing with the Washington Nationals, where he remained for two years.

In February 2025, he signed as a free agent with the Cincinnati Reds, but eventually made his way to the New York Mets in September 2025.

His journey didn’t end there. Two months later, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In June 2026, the Pirates shipped La Sorsa out to the Red Sox.

In the minors this season, he owns a 2.78 ERA and 26 strikeouts across 32.1 innings pitched through 28 games, two of which he started. He’s walked seven batters.

He has appeared in only one Major League game for Boston this year, taking place on June 7 against the New York Yankees.

As noted by David Shovein of NBC Sports, “With the lack of quality bullpen depth around the league, La Rosa shouldn’t be out of work for long.”

The southpaw has plenty to offer other organizations — it’s simply a matter of taking a chance on him. Ultimately, with his current stat sheet, there’s enough promise here that should be enticing to other ballclubs on the hunt for bullpen support.

His performance down in Triple-A speaks for itself.

Considering the poor placement of Boston in the standings earlier in the season, they’ve been whipping themselves into shape.

They’re now riding a stunning seven-game winning streak. Their latest victory came on Wednesday after clinching a 4-0 shutout over the White Sox.

With one more game remaining in the three-game series, Boston is aiming for a clean sweep.

Following their finale, the Red Sox will host the Athletics at Fenway Park for another three-game homestand. This set will commence on Friday, Aug. 7, at 7:10 p.m. ET.

Looking at the MLB standings, Boston is ranked in the upper half of the league in seventh place.

In the American League East, the Red Sox were once last in the division. Now, they’re third at 62-51 overall.

The Tampa Bay Rays (68-46) and the New York Yankees (64-51) still lead in first and second, respectively, but Boston has been steadily climbing the chain.

The Baltimore Orioles (56-59) and the Toronto Blue Jays (54-62) round out the division in fourth and fifth place.

At this rate, FanGraphs gives the Red Sox a 13.4% chance of winning their division and a 94.2% chance of reaching the playoffs.

As for the prestigious World Series, they have a 6.4% chance of coming out on top.
