Who Are the Starting Pitchers for Team USA and Canada?
While starting lineups have not been announced as of late Friday afternoon, the probable starting pitchers for each team have been revealed.
For Team USA, San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb gets his second start of the WBC. Webb, a 29-year-old right-hander, got the start in the Team USA WBC opener against Brazil. In what turned out to be a lopsided 15-5 Team USA victory, Webb threw 52 pitches over four innings, allowing one run on one hit — a game-opening home run by 20-year-old Lucas Ramirez, the son of former Boston Red Sox great Manny Ramirez.
But that was the only time the Brazil hitters reached Webb, who proceeded to strike out six while walking none.
For Team Canada, Arizona Diamondbacks 6-foot-5, 250-pound righty Michael Soroka takes the mound to start the game, also making his second start of the WBC.
The Calgary, Alberta, native also pitched Canada’s opener in the tournament, an 8-2 trouncing of Colombia, going three innings and allowing a run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Can Team USA Bounce Back?
Team USA is somewhat lucky to have even made the quarterfinals, after a stunning 8-6 defeat to lightly regarded Italy — who ended up winning Pool B with USA finishing as runners-up.
The USA needed an Italy win over Mexico in the Pool B finale to punch their ticket to the knockout rounds.
