New York Mets rookie outfielder Carson Benge’s career started off with just two hits in his first 30 at-bats. To their credit, the team did not place him on the shuttle to Syracuse. Instead, the team and rookie weathered the early storm, with Benge raising his average from .091 on April 7 to .267, where he sits right now. In light of Benge’s strong rookie campaign, he was named the Mets’ winner of the 2026 Heart and Hustle Award.

Fought from the Start

Benge didn’t seem likely to be on the major league roster for long, as mentioned. Yet, he found a way. As a result, it wasn’t always the most aesthetically pleasing, but it was effective nonetheless. After a spring training in which the Mets saw their prospect thrive, posting a .366 AVG and .874 OPS in 14 games. Former Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised him.

He earned it. He had a hell of a camp. We are all excited to watch this kid play… Just how he carried himself throughout camp, you could tell right away that there is something special about this guy.”

In his first game as a Met, Benge launched his first home run, bringing the CitiField crowd to their collective feet.

Benge, when asked about his initial thoughts, did not hold back.

Joy over everything, I would say. Just knowing that I worked hard for it. Countless hours I spent… my dream since I was little is pretty cool.”

On the Highway

The Mets rookie’s average, as mentioned, bottomed out in April. Yet, Benge fought through, pushing ahead while allowing the words not to affect him. One of Benge’s biggest issues remained the fastball, which he could not catch up with. Mendoza spoke to the change.

“Short, aggressive, getting the barrel to the ball, using the whole field… Just hitting line drives and not missing pitches. Like on time for the fastball.”

Now, he’s batting .312 against the heater, according to Baseball Savant, which speaks volumes about his progress.

Highlights in a Lost Season

The Mets are not making the Mets, save for a desperate, all-time winning streak. For Benge, specific examples could paint the eventual picture of how Benge can contribute and become a cornerstone. First, on May 13, against the Detroit Tigers, the outfielder hits a walk-off RBI single to win the game. In the big picture, many will forget the walkoff. However, that level of confidence builds.

Next on June 7, Benge enjoys a 5-for-5 day against the San Diego Padres, including a home run and a triple. The Mets do not believe that Bnege would ever replace Pete Alonso. Yet, with his power and speed, they are hoping a 30-20 season becomes commonplace.

Lastly, Benge’s versatility allows him to play all three spots. With five assists and one double play, the Mets look to have a solid player in the outfield who can keep baserunners from taking liberties.

The Mets are in a rebuilding phase on the fly. Benge gives them a piece to build around and hopes that some of their other players can follow suit. Next year, with a full season under his belt, how will Benge adjust?
