The Yankees continue to be active ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

The New York Yankees already traded for third baseman Ryan McMahon, but some analysts are wondering if a bigger deal is on the way. With the Los Angeles Dodgers looming once again as a World Series contender, could the Yankees strike a wild blockbuster MLB trade to form their own superteam?

Count this one as unlikely, but Sports Illustrated’s Alan Goldsher presents the bones of a trade proposal that has the Yankees land Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout. Yankees fans should not start buying their Trout pinstriped jerseys just yet, but let’s explore how the superstar would fit on the Yankees.

Here’s what you need to know about the wild proposal with the MLB trade deadline looming on July 31, 2025.

So, What’s the Deal? How the Yankees Could Trade for Angels OF Mike Trout

Let’s start with the proposed trade from Sports Illustrated. The Angels land a haul of players and prospects from the Yankees including outfielder Jason Dominguez, pitcher Cam Schittler, prospect Spencer Jones and pitcher Will Warren.

For New York, the deal is relatively simple as the Yankees land Trout along with his 12-year, $426 million contract.

Trout’s deal runs through 2030 with the outfielder’s annual salary topping $37 million each season. Trout is handsomely paid for good reason as a three-time MVP, 11-time All-Star and 9-time Silver Slugger.

Pairing Mike Trout With Aaron Judge Would Be Fun, Even if the MLB Trade Is Unrealistic

The star is not having his best season as Trout is hitting .236 with 18 home runs and 45 RBI through his first 78 appearances. Goldsher makes the argument for the Yankees opening up their checkbook and striking a deal for Trout.

“Will a Judge/Trout duo get New York past the Blue Jays? Maybe, maybe not, but who cares?” Goldsher wrote in a July 24, story titled, “MLB Mock Blockbuster Trade: New York Yankees Break Baseball, Pair Mike Trout With Aaron Judge.” “Judge and Trout will lead the Yanks to a lengthy postseason run, whether they kick things off with a Wild Card berth or a divisional championship.

“… As for the Angels, this blockbuster gets them off Trout’s onerous contract, and lands them a near-can’t-misser in Dominguez as well as a couple of righties who could anchor their rotation for years. Not a bad haul for an aging, injury-prone player, even if he is a future Hall of Famer.”

Mike Trout Continues To Be Linked to the Phillies in MLB Trade Rumors

The Angels trading Trout remains unlikely, but this will not stop the speculation until the July 31, deadline passes. One team Trout continues to be linked to is the Philadelphia Phillies.

“I see it all the time,” Trout said of the Phillies rumors, per Sports Illustrated’s Eva Geitheim. “Especially going to Eagles games, just being a South Jersey kid, I’m always going to get it. Love Philly, these were my sports teams growing up.”

As for the Yankees, the club already took a swing to land McMahon. The question is if bigger moves could be on the way in the coming days.
