Seattle Mariners placed left-handed reliever Gabe Speier on the 15-day injured list retroactive to May 3rd. Following Speier’s placement on the injured list, the Mariners optioned Cole Wilcox to the AAA Tacoma Rainiers. They also recalled left-handed pitcher Josh Simpson to the major league roster, and recently claimed left-hander José Suarez joins the roster as well.

Speier’s injury is another major blow to the Seattle bullpen. He pitched with a 2.92 ERA and operated as the main left-handed option for the Mariners along with Jose Ferrer. Just a few days ago, the Mariners placed Matt Brash on the injured list. The Mariners are now missing two of their top high leverage arms going into a pivotal series against the Atlanta Braves.

Despite the overall struggles of the team at 16-19, the Mariners bullpen remains an area of strength. They rank 3rd in overall bullpen ERA.

Cal Raleigh Continues to Nurse Injury

Seattle Mariners star catcher and 2025 AL MVP runner up Cal Raleigh continues to sit as he recovers from his general soreness. Before Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Royals, Raleigh was a last minute scratch after discomfort flared on his right side.

Sunday, Raleigh spoke to the media, “As of right now, it’s one day at a time, see how I feel. Like I said, we’re still in the early stages. I don’t know where we’re at. But like I said, compared to where it was feeling postgame Friday and yesterday early, very positive, very encouraging. So that’s kind of where we’re at right now.”

The Mariners are operating with extreme caution regarding their star player. Raleigh seems frustrated as he wants to help his team win. The Kansas City Royals just swept the Mariners at home.

Raleigh, “I could go out there and play, but I think, overall, looking at it, it’s May. And trust me, I want to be out there, but obviously thinking about the team and the longevity, and knowing that I’m thinking about the guys in there and trying to do that. And taking a day or two is probably best for everybody, including myself. So, obviously it’s not what I want to be doing. But better safe than sorry in this scenario.”

Raleigh awaits MRI results that were imaged on Saturday. The Mariners called up Jhonny Pereda to partner with Mitch Garver behind the dish in the meantime.

Prior to Monday’s game against the Atlanta Braves, Mariners manager Dan Wilson spoke with the media to provide updates on Cal Raleigh and Gabe Speier.

Wilson said, “He’s getting himself into a good spot. He’s testing himself a little bit more today. We’ll have more information once we see how he feels after he’s done some work today. A decision will be forthcoming here within the next day or so.”

Ryan Bliss is with the team in case Raleigh is placed on the injured list.

Wilson also provided some perspective on Speier’s injury as well. He said, “I think, you know, something that I think has been lingering on him a little bit, and just thought it was a good time to take a little rest here and give it the time that it needs. I think he’ll be in a good spot here after he gets a little bit of rest, and can move on from it.”
