The Toronto Blue Jays have a Kyle Tucker-Bo Bichette problem. Primarily, they can’t sign both.
Despite the heroic effort that Bichette provided in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he appears to be moving on. If some reports are to be believed, so are the Blue Jays.
With Bichette, seemingly, out of the picture, Toronto can focus on locking down Tucker. Recent developments suggest that a decision is imminent. One insider reveals that a decision could come as early as today.
Kyle Tucker Timeline Revealed
MLB insider Jon Heyman revealed a potential timeline for when Tucker will make his decision.
“Folks involved say a deal for No. 1 free agent Kyle Tucker could come as soon as today,” Heyman wrote in a social media post on January 15, 2026. “Ex-teammates guess he’d prefer Toronto over an even bigger market (and like spring near Tampa). Mets offered $50M-a-year deal. Dodgers are used to winning. Anyone else is a major upset.”
If Tucker’s new deal were to be announced today, that would be huge news. Signing the belle of this free agency ball would cap off an incredible offseason for the Blue Jays.
They have already added Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, Tyler Rogers, and Kazuma Okamoto. Tucker would give them another offensive weapon who is also an excellent outfielder.
Some believe that a decision will be announced in the next few days. Funnily enough, it’s Tucker’s birthday on January 17th. That suggests that a decision could be made by the 17th at the latest.
Blue Jays Offer to Kyle Tucker
Up to this point, we haven’t heard much about what the Blue Jays have offered Tucker. That is, until Jeff Passan’s appearance on Sportsnet on January 14, 2026.
Passan hopped on a Sportsnet TV segment to drop some Tucker and Blue Jays nuggets.
“I think it’s going to happen this week,” Passan said when asked for a timeline on Tucker’s decision. “It could be sooner than that. Because at this point, he sort of understands what the market is. The Toronto Blue Jays have been the only team that has shown the willingness to go as deep as 10 years potentially.”
The primary obstacle to the Blue Jays’ acquisition of Tucker is the New York Mets. It has been reported that they are willing to offer $50 million per year for up to four years. To be honest, it’s tough for anyone to turn down that kind of money.
The Blue Jays-Tucker Connection
However, amid all of this, the connections to the Blue Jays are already established. Myles Straw and George Springer are both friends with Tucker and former teammates of his with the Houston Astros.
The power of relationships cannot be underestimated in sports. These players spend a massive amount of time together, and being able to go to a team with players you used to play with and got along with is a massive bonus for Toronto’s chances of landing this year’s biggest free agent bat.
The End of the Bo Bichette Era
Change is difficult to manage at times, and the Blue Jays will have to prepare for significant changes in their roster this season. Namely, Bichette moving on.
The most likely suitor at this time is the Philadelphia Phillies.
“I think the expectation is that at the end of the day the Phillies are going to be the highest bidders,” Passan said on Sportsnet. “They have cap (space), they have reason to go after him.”
The Phillies also have the old Blue Jays bench coach, Don Mattingly. As stated above, never underestimate the power of relationships in sports.
Additionally, another insider believes that Toronto’s interest in Tucker has meant they have closed the book on a return by Bichette. Bob Nightengale appeared on Foul Territory to explain.
“I think they’ve already made their choice. They want Tucker,” Nightengale said. He also said that the only way they get Bichette is if they don’t sign Tucker.
With the Blue Jays’ 10-year offer on the table, Tucker has a big decision to make. Does he want the long-term security and old friends offered by Toronto? Or does he want to take as much money as he can from the Mets (or Dodgers) and re-enter the market in a few years?
If these recent reports are to be believed, the baseball world will find out very, very soon.
