The New York Knicks are still searching for their first victory of the season. Their efforts to break out of an early slump won’t get any easier with another setback to their backcourt depth.
Jose Alvarado has been ruled out for Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Pistons at Madison Square Garden, according to the NBA’s official injury report.
The veteran guard continues to deal with a left ankle sprain and will miss his second consecutive game.
For a Knicks team already 0-3, his absence leaves coach Mike Brown searching for answers.
Jose Alvarado Injury Update Brings Another Knicks Absence

Alvarado missed Sunday’s 111-102 loss to the Orlando Magic after initially being listed as questionable.
Monday’s injury report confirmed he would remain sidelined against Detroit.
The Knicks have not announced a timetable for his return.
Alvarado played in New York’s first two games, averaging 5.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 13.6 minutes.
He contributed eight points, three assists and two steals in the season-opening loss to Philadelphia.
However, Alvarado struggled against Boston, finishing with two points and three turnovers in 11 minutes.
His value goes beyond scoring.
Alvarado brings defensive pressure, energy and an aggressive approach that can disrupt opposing guards.
Without him, New York has turned to several other backcourt options. The results have been mixed.
Tyler Kolek Shines as Playmaker, Jordan Clarkson Struggles

Kolek made the strongest case for additional minutes during Sunday’s loss to Orlando.
The second-year guard recorded nine assists, three rebounds and one steal in 15 minutes.
However, he went scoreless, missing all four field-goal attempts, including two from beyond the arc.
Still, his nine assists led the Knicks, providing a glimpse of his potential as a facilitator.
Clarkson had a much quieter evening.
The veteran guard played just five minutes, 19 seconds, finishing with zero points and one rebound. He missed his only field-goal attempt, a 3-pointer.
McBride also struggled offensively.
He managed one point, one rebound, one assist and one steal in nearly 13 minutes.
McBride missed his lone field-goal attempt and converted one of two free throws.
Combined, the three guards scored just one point on 0-for-6 shooting.
Their uneven production leaves Brown with an important decision about his bench rotation.
Kolek offered encouraging playmaking, but the Knicks still need more scoring from their reserves.
Knicks Face Unbeaten Pistons With Backcourt Questions
New York’s next opponent presents another difficult challenge.
Detroit enters Tuesday’s game 3-0 following victories over Boston, Miami and Philadelphia.
However, the Pistons have their own injury concerns.
Starting center Jalen Duren has been ruled out with a right hamstring strain, while Ausar Thompson is questionable because of a right ankle sprain.
For the Knicks, Alvarado’s absence creates an opportunity for Kolek, Clarkson and McBride to establish themselves.
Kolek’s nine assists offered a promising development in an otherwise disappointing loss.
Yet New York cannot afford another ineffective performance from its bench.
The Knicks are trying to avoid their first 0-4 start in years, and Brown needs a more reliable rotation.
Until Alvarado returns, the pressure falls on the guards behind Jalen Brunson to help turn New York’s season around.
