Moving back to bench
Thompson is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Pacers. Thompson will move back to the bench due to the return of Tobias Harris (back) to the starting unit. Thompson has averaged 4.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in two appearances this season.
Making first start of season
Thompson will start Wednesday's game against Memphis, Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press reports. With Cade Cunningham (hip) and Tobias Harris (hip) sidelined, Thompson will make his first start of the season. The second-year wing made his season debut Monday, posting five points (2-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt), four assists and three rebounds in 16 minutes. Thompson will presumably still face a minutes restriction despite starting.
Gets 16 minutes in season debut
Thompson (illness/conditioning) made his season debut in Monday's 102-100 win over the Raptors, finishing with five points (2-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt), four assists and three rebounds in 16 minutes. The second-year forward made his 2024-25 debut Monday after missing the Pistons' first 18 games of the season while awaiting medical clearance from a blood clot issue that first cropped up last March and then getting himself back into playing shape. The Pistons may have deliberately eased Thompson back in with a light workload Monday, and he also exited for a brief period of time after being kicked in the knee. Thompson could see his playing time pick up a bit in the games to come, but now that he's part of a Detroit roster that looks to be much improved from last season's 14-win outfit, a consistent 25-to-30-minute role won't necessarily be in the cards.
Available to make season debut
Thompson (illness) is available to make his season debut in Saturday's game against the Magic. Thompson will finally make his season debut Saturday, and his return to the rotation should boost the Pistons' second-unit depth enormously. He averaged 8.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game as a rookie, and he should see minutes right away in a rebuilding Pistons team that can certainly use his versatility on both ends of the court.
Questionable for Saturday
Thompson (illness) is listed as questionable for Saturday's game against the Magic. Thompson has been upgraded to questionable which is a step in the right direction as the second-year forward regains his conditioning. The 21-year-old has yet to make his season debut, though he is seemingly nearing a return to game action.
Not playing Thursday
Thompson (illness) is out for Thursday's game against the Hornets. Thompson has yet to make his season debut in 2024-25 and continues to be labeled as being in the process of "return to competition reconditioning." His next chance to suit up will come against the Magic on Saturday.
Doubtful for Thursday
Thompson (conditioning) is doubtful for Thursday's game against the Hornets. A doubtful tag is a step in the right direction as Thompson continues to progress toward a return. He also just returned from a G League assignment in which he received some extra practice reps. Assuming Thompson is held out Thursday, he could return as soon as Saturday's game against Orlando. The second-year forward has been cleared to play by the NBA's Fitness-To-Play panel, and coach J.B. Bickerstaff said Wednesday that the team doesn't want to play Thompson in a game until he's completely comfortable. The second-year wing hasn't been playing 5-on-5 and has been limited in his workouts since March, per Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press.
Recalled to NBA
Detroit recalled Thompson (conditioning) from the G League's Motor City Cruise on Tuesday. Thompson joined the Cruise on Tuesday to get in some practice work, and he's now back with the Pistons ahead of Thursday's game against the Hornets. The second-year forward has been cleared to play by the NBA's Fitness-To-Play panel, but it's unclear when he'll be ready to make his season debut. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said Wednesday that the team doesn't want to play Thompson in a game until he's completely comfortable. The second-year wing hasn't been playing 5-on-5 and has been limited in his workouts since March, per Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press.
Assigned to G League
Thompson (illness) was assigned to the Pistons' G League affiliate Tuesday. Thompson is seemingly nearing a return to game action and will join the Motor City Cruise to help regain his conditioning. The second-year forward has been cleared to play by the NBA's Fitness-To-Play panel, though the club has decided to work him back to playing form slowly. Thompson's next chance to make his season debut will come Thursday against the Hornets.
