The situation involving Atlanta Falcons rookie edge rusher James Pearce Jr. continues to grow more serious.

What initially surfaced as a multi-charge arrest in Miami has now taken on a far more troubling turn.

Pearce, who was expected to be a foundational piece of Atlanta’s defense entering his second season in 2026, is now facing allegations that extend well beyond a routine offseason incident.

According to a report from Fox Sports South Florida’s Andy Slater, the events leading up to Pearce’s arrest were far more aggressive than first understood that involved Rickea Jackson, WNBA player for the Los Angeles Sparks.

“James Pearce Jr. is accused of intentionally crashing his Lamborghini into his ex-girlfriend’s car multiple times, trying to stop her from getting to a police station, law-enforcement sources tell me,” Slater posted.

“That alleged incident led to cops chasing the NFL star.”

Slater later added, “This entire situation started after Pearce Jr. allegedly stalked his ex from his car and tried to get into her car at an intersection, I’m told. She sped away, but he still continued to go after her.

“Pearce Jr. also intentionally drove into a police officer, hitting the cop’s knee in an effort to get away, I’m told.”

A high-ranking police source told Slater that Pearce is “lucky to be alive,” as an officer had his gun drawn after the rookie edge rusher allegedly would not obey commands.

James Pearce Jr.’s Allegations Add Context to Arrest Charges

The allegations outlined in Slater’s report provide added context to the charges listed in the police report, which include two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon (domestic), aggravated stalking (domestic), fleeing and eluding police officers, aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer without violence.

Local 10 News reported that Pearce allegedly attempted to evade law enforcement before crashing his vehicle near Northwest 103rd Avenue and 66th Street. Video circulating from the scene appears to show multiple officers detaining an individual wearing a light blue jacket matching Pearce’s arrest photo.

It was Local 10 News that also confirmed it was Rickea Jackson involved in the dispute with Pearce.

The case remains an open legal matter.

James Pearce Jr. Draft Concerns Resurface

Pearce’s name was not without questions entering the 2025 NFL Draft.

Early in the draft process, he was widely projected as a top-tier first-round selection. However, as the pre-draft cycle unfolded, reports began to surface suggesting teams had concerns about “personality issues,” which some believed contributed to his slide down draft boards before Atlanta ultimately selected him No. 26 overall.

Atlanta maintained at the time that it had thoroughly vetted Pearce and felt comfortable making the investment — even trading future draft capital to move back into the first round to secure him.

That background resurfaced when 92.9 The Game’s Carl Dukes weighed in.

“When I talked about there were questions about his character… there were things I talked about on the show before the draft last year,” Dukes said. “They said they vetted him and felt comfortable drafting him. @AtlantaFalcons. We will wait to see and hear all the info before rushing to judgment. As I always do.”

For the Falcons, the timing could not be worse. Pearce was coming off a standout rookie season in which he recorded 10.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hits and 10 tackles for loss in 17 games. He was expected to anchor a defense that had emerged as one of the league’s most improved units.

Now, the focus shifts from production to process.

What ultimately happens with Pearce will depend on how the legal situation unfolds. But the allegations — combined with prior draft-day concerns — have placed the Falcons in a position they undoubtedly hoped to avoid so early in a new era under general manager Ian Cunningham, president of football Matt Ryan and head coach Kevin Stefanski.
