In all likelihood, the next head coach of the Baltimore Ravens still has football games left for his team to play in.
After a flurry of interviews in the first days after head coach John Harbaugh was fired after 18 seasons, the Ravens continued to expand their web of coaching candidates on the eve of NFL Wild Card Round.
“The Ravens have requested to interview Bills OC Joe Brady for their head coach position, source said,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on Friday, January 9. “He can interview after Buffalo plays.”
The Buffalo Bills are the No. 6 seed in the AFC and travel to face the No. 3 seed and AFC South Division champion Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Wild Card Round on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST (CBS).
Brady has been an assistant coach with the Bills since 2022, starting as quarterbacks coach before becoming offensive coordinator in 2024 and helping quarterback Josh Allen win NFL MVP honors for the first time.
Wunderkind OC on GOAT College Football Team
Most of the football loving world first heard of Brady in 2019, when he won the Broyles Award as college football’s top assistant coach as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for LSU.
Brady, then just 29 years old, helped orchestrate an offense on a team that went 15-0 and won the College Football Playoff National Championship. On that team, quarterback Joe Burrow won the Heisman Trophy by the biggest margin in the history of the award.
In 2019, Burrow set NCAA single-season records for touchdown passes (60), total touchdowns (65), QB rating (202.) as well as leading the FBS with 5,679 passing yards and completing 76.3 percent of his passes.
Working with Brady, Burrow went from a possible third-day pick to the No. 1 overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2020 NFL draft.
Worked Way Back Up After Carolina Nightmare
Brady being mentioned for head coach openings is a testament to his resilience. After leaving LSU, Brady took a job as the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers during the doomed Matt Rhule era. Brady was fired after 2 seasons.
Brady didn’t stay unemployed for very long. He caught on with the Bills as their quarterback coach in 2022 and was promoted to interim offensive coordinator after Ken Dorsey was fired following a 5-5 start to the 2023 regular season.
Under Brady’s “Everybody Eats” offense, the Bills instituted a much more well-rounded offensive attack that didn’t put everything on Allen’s shoulders and Buffalo won 6 of its last 7 games on the way to winning the AFC East Division for the fourth consecutive season.
In 2024, his first year as full time offensive coordinator, the Bills went 13-4 and advanced to the AFC Championship Game.
Betting Odds on Ravens Next Head Coach
According to DraftKings, 2 favorites have emerged to become the next head coach for the Ravens with recently fired Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski (+350 odds) and Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jessie Minter (+350 odds).
Minter was a defensive assistant coach for the Ravens under John Harbaugh from 2017 to 2020.
“Minter is the league’s most exciting young defensive coordinator, and it’s possible he fields calls from every team with a head coaching vacancy this winter,” The Ringer’s Steven Ruiz and Diante Lee wrote in their NFL head coach candidate rankings.
