Sean Payton didn’t hold back when addressing the Denver Broncos’ decision to bring backJ.K. Dobbins. And based on how he framed it, the message was meant to be heard loud and clear.
“Dobbins was a priority. Ahead of ALL OTHERS. And that’ll anger people,” Payton said, emphasizing just how strongly the organization viewed the move.
His tone was very deliberate.
Another version of the quote only reinforced it further: “J.K. Dobbins was a priority. Above all others. He brings ten players along with him. He had a big impact last year.”
Right there, Payton essentially laid out the Broncos’ reasoning. This wasn’t only about his production. It was also about his important presence in the locker room.
And more importantly, it was a direct response to the noise surrounding Denver’s offseason approach.
“J.K. Dobbins was a priority. Above all others. He brings ten players along with him. He had a big impact last year.” — Sean Payton says Dobbins, despite the injuries, a huge culture guy and leader.

Sean Payton Doubles Down on Broncos’ Dobbins Decision Amid Criticism
The Broncos have heard the criticism. Outside of the Jaylen Waddletrade, the offseason hasn’t matched the splashy expectations many fans had for a team coming off a No. 1 seed and AFC Championship appearance.
Besides Waddle, the only other player the Broncos acquired from another team is safety Tycen Anderson.
But Payton has made it clear that perception isn’t driving decisions.
“Frenzy is what you don’t want,” he said during recent offseason interviews, pushing back on the idea that aggressive spending automatically leads to better results.
Rather than chasing bigger names or making reactionary moves, Denver stuck with a player already in the building. The Broncos were linked to several big-name free agent running backs throughout the offseason, but they chose to bring back Dobbins instead. That decision says a lot about how Payton views him, not just as a contributor but as a tone setter for the entire roster.
The fact that Payton openly acknowledged the decision could “anger people” adds another layer. He knows the move won’t satisfy everyone, but he just doesn’t care.
Leadership, Culture and Why Dobbins “Meant Too Much” to Broncos
Payton didn’t sound like he was giving a typical coach answer. When he said Dobbins “brings ten players along with him,” he was talking about his leadership and the kind of things that don’t show up in the stat sheet.
That aligns with how the Broncos have approached this offseason.
General manager George Paton echoed a similar sentiment, emphasizing that Dobbins “meant too much” to the team to let him walk. When both the head coach and GM are aligned like that, it usually signals a deeper value than just on-field production.
Even with injuries, Dobbins made a strong impression in 2025. Not just as a contributor, but as someone who impacted the locker room and identity of the team.
And that’s where this decision became clearer.
Denver isn’t trying to win the offseason. They’re building off their 2025 success with one goal in mind: to win the Super Bowl.
