Jameson Williams gave the Detroit Lions 46 yards. His taunting penalty immediately surrendered 15.

The Lions receiver caught a deep pass from Jared Goff against the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 1, reaching Minnesota’s 9-yard line before drawing a flag for taunting. The penalty pushed Detroit back to the 24 and introduced another possible consequence: an NFL fine.

Financial discipline remains pending. But Williams has already been through that process this season, including a successful appeal that wiped out two fines stemming from Detroit’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

This play gave the Lions an immediate boost and an immediate setback. Whether it also costs Williams money will be determined through the league’s disciplinary review.

Video of Williams’ taunting penalty against the Vikings is below.

Jameson Williams’ Taunting Penalty Cuts Into 46-Yard Gain

The play-by-play entry recorded Goff finding Williams deep down the middle for 46 yards, with Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy credited with the tackle.

Williams reached the Minnesota 9. Then came the 15-yard taunting penalty, enforced from that spot.

The reception still counted. Williams retained his 46 receiving yards, and Goff retained the completion. Detroit’s field position took the hit.

Instead of snapping the ball inside Minnesota’s 10, the Lions had to operate from the 24. The penalty effectively trimmed the possession’s field-position gain to 31 yards, moving Detroit outside the red zone after Williams had carried it deep inside.

That is the frustration built into this sequence. Williams produced the kind of explosive reception that can change a possession, then gave Minnesota’s defense another 15 yards to defend.

The available play-by-play identifies the infraction as taunting but does not describe the specific words or gesture that prompted the flag.

How Much Could the NFL Fine Jameson Williams?

The NFL’s published fine schedule lists taunting at $11,941 for a first offense and $17,911 for a second offense.

Those figures provide a reference point, not a confirmed bill for Williams. A taunting flag does not automatically establish that a fine will follow or determine the amount.

The league reviews potential violations separately from the officials’ game-day enforcement. Players assessed fines receive notice identifying the play, the violation and the amount, along with information about an appeal.

Williams recently demonstrated why that final step matters.

As Heavy’s Dave Holcomb reported, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport revealed on Oct. 13 that Williams won appeals of two fines from the Bills game. The amounts were $14,926 for an illegal celebration/vulgar act and $11,941 for taunting, totaling $26,867.

Both were rescinded. That history makes it premature to treat Sunday’s flag as an automatic second-offense assessment.

Williams was part of a broader wave of Lions fines following the Buffalo matchup. His successful appeals also showed that an initial disciplinary ruling can change.

For this play, the established cost is 15 yards. Any deduction from Williams’ paycheck requires another decision.
