Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur has made it known he’s looking forward to sharing a field with his younger brother this week.

He even has a backup plan in case Wednesday’s joint practice with the Arizona Cardinals gets too heated, joking that he and Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur should settle any flare-ups themselves rather than allowing players to fight.

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported that the Packers coach suggested players could “tag” the two brothers into the action.

“You come tag me in. They can tag in my brother. And we’ll throw down on the 50,” LaFleur said, according to Demovsky.

The line added another chapter to a matchup LaFleur has been having fun with for weeks.

Green Bay and Arizona will practice together Wednesday before closing the preseason against one another Friday at Lambeau Field, putting the brothers on opposite sidelines as head coaches for the first time.

Joint practices can become heated quickly, and LaFleur has reason to stress keeping the work productive.

His solution for this one was delivered with a smile.

Instead of. watching Packers and Cardinals players risk losing valuable reps because of a scuffle, LaFleur volunteered himself for the hypothetical main event at midfield.

There’s a personal wrinkle that makes the joke land.

Mike LaFleur, 39, is entering his first season as Arizona’s head coach, while Matt LaFleur is heading into his eighth year in Green Bay. ESPN noted that the seven-year age gap hasn’t stopped the younger LaFleur from pushing back while the brothers build the practice schedule.

Matt LaFleur joked that Mike has been quick to criticize parts of the itinerary, asking why certain periods were included. Still, he described the planning process as healthy, with give-and-take from both staffs.

The Packers’ official site described Monday’s media availability as part of the final week of training camp, leaving Green Bay with limited opportunities to evaluate its roster before the regular season.

Wednesday gives the Packers a shot to test their personnel against new competition before decisions tighten ahead of the 53-man roster cutdown.

The playful tone didn’t begin Monday.

Earlier in August, LaFleur said on “Up & Adams” that he could not wait to “whip” his brother again, adding that he had been doing it his whole life. The two coaches started the friendly trash talk weeks before Arizona’s trip to Green Bay.

The backdrop has changed for Mike LaFleur after three seasons as Sean McVay’s offensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams. Arizona hired him as head coach this offseason, creating the unusual situation of two brothers simultaneously running NFL teams.

Matt LaFleur acknowledged Monday that the occasion will be special.

Their parents, Denny and Kristi, will likely attend, and Demovsky reported that Matt joked they could resemble “Christmas trees” while wearing Packers green and Cardinals red.

Nevertheless, the priority for Green Bay is getting useful work before Friday’s preseason finale.

And if tempers flare Wednesday, he has volunteered a playful solution to settle things.
