Minnesota Vikings Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter has never been shy about saying what he thinks, which is why his latest comments on Justin Jefferson stood out for the opposite reason. On Up & Adams with Kay Adams, the former Viking said he’s been telling Jefferson to stay quiet about the Vikings’ quarterback situation.
Vikings Great Advises Jefferson
“If you look at the QB controversy (over the years), he hasn’t said a word,” Carter said. “I threatened his life to keep his mouth shut. Don’t be like myself… don’t be like any other wide receiver. Keep doing exactly what you’re doing. You got a great image here, the organization loves you. Don’t complain about the quarterback, don’t mention the quarterback unless you can say good things about him.” – Former Vikings WR Cris Carter on the Up & Adams Show
Cris Carter was straightforward about the quarterback comments to make his point. Jefferson has watched multiple quarterbacks cycle through Minnesota and has not turned any of it into public commentary. Carter, who was often more vocal during his own career, sees that restraint as useful rather than passive. Jefferson has been a leader in and out of the locker room, and Carter’s message seemed to be for him to remain on that path and not be a diva.

Vikings QB Situation Hasn’t Been Easy
Last season made the choice harder. J.J. McCarthy’s inconsistency limited the downfield shots Jefferson is built for, and the receiver’s numbers reflected it. Carter has noted before that Jefferson still said the right things publicly and stayed aligned with Kevin O’Connell even when the production did not match his talent. The “threatened his life” framing is just Carter’s way of saying he’s been reinforcing that message sternly, not literally.
Now Justin Jefferson’s picture is different this season than last season. The Vikings moved on from McCarthy and installed Kyler Murray as the starter. Early returns have shown Murray and Jefferson connecting on the kinds of plays that were harder to generate last year. Carter’s advice does not change with Kyler Murray. Jefferson staying quiet keeps the focus on the quarterback developing rather than on the star receiver’s frustration.

Jefferson Leads By Example
Receivers with Jefferson’s status often have more leverage than they use. Some spend it on sideline body language or pointed comments that create their own storylines. He could have done what other players have, in the media, on the sidelines, or even by threatening a trade, but Jefferson has avoided that. Carter’s message is that his approach is worth keeping, especially while Murray is still settling into the offense. The quarterback doesn’t need a public callout from the team’s best player while he is still proving he can get him the ball consistently. Jefferson’s approach is of a leader in the locker room, and sets the tone for the rest of the team.

Carter’s Advice Is Right
Carter is not pretending the situation has been easy for Jefferson. And he is right. Jefferson has his own personal achievement goals, and he’s put those aside in the media and been the ultimate team guy. The difference from other receivers is that Jefferson has chosen to manage any frustration or communication inside the building rather than discuss it outside. For Carter, that’s the right way to handle it, and he is telling Jefferson to keep being the leader that handles business in-house.
I think the fanbase loves him even more for it, and he’s shown others in the locker room how to lead on the Minnesota Vikings.
