The New York Giants have been active early on this offseason as they attempt to take a step forward in 2026. Things got off to a positive start, as they managed to hire their top head coach candidate, John Harbaugh, after he was surprisingly fired by the Baltimore Ravens in the wake of the 2025 campaign.

Ever since Harbaugh was fired, it seemed like his offensive coordinator with Baltimore, Todd Monken, would be following him to New York. That plan changed when Monken was surprisingly hired to be the Cleveland Browns‘ new head coach. As a result, the Giants have had to restart their offensive coordinator search, and that recently led them to one of their former quarterbacks, Alex Tanney.

Immediately after Harbaugh was hired, reports indicated that Monken was going to be his offensive coordinator, unless he ended up landing a head coach job. Monken never seemed to be a frontrunner for any of the openings, but at the last second, the Browns hired him, forcing Harbaugh to find an alternative option to work as his offensive coordinator.

Considering how nobody really expected Monken to land with Cleveland, that has forced New York to essentially start from scratch with its offensive coordinator search. Harbaugh is beginning to identify potential candidates, and one guy who has emerged as an option is Tanney, who spent three seasons of his playing career with the Giants as a backup quarterback.

Since calling it quits as a player, Tanney has transitioned into coaching, and he has garnered some recognition for his work with the Indianapolis Colts over the past two seasons as their pass game coordinator. Now, Tanney is receiving consideration for offensive coordinator openings, as New York requested to interview him for its open position.

“Giants have requested to interview Colts pass-game coordinator Alex Tanney for their offensive coordinator spot, per source. Tanney was a Giants QB from 2018-20,” Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported in a post on X.

With a rock-solid head coach in place in Harbaugh, the Giants have the freedom to go in any direction they please with their offensive coordinator. They could opt for a veteran option who has experience running an offense, or they could go for a younger candidate (such as Tanney) and hope that he can develop alongside star second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Considering the work Tanney did with Daniel Jones in Indianapolis in 2025, it’s safe to say that Tanney is an up-and-coming coach. At only 38 years old, he’s on the younger side, but he is familiar with New York, and he could be the perfect guy to help Dart improve under center as his career moves forward. Tanney may not be the frontrunner just yet, but his ties to the Giants make him an interesting candidate worth keeping tabs on as Harbaugh ramps up his search.
