By all accounts, New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is safe. There has been no official word from owner Woody Johnson, but AG spoke to the media on Tuesday, January 6, for the required end-of-season presser.
However, all of that could change. The NFL world was shaken with the Baltimore Ravens surprisingly firing head coach John Harbaugh.
ESPN radio host Jake Asman said this latest news update should cause the Jets to have a change of heart.
“I have zero faith Woody Johnson is smart enough to do it, but the Jets should dump Aaron Glenn and hire John Harbaugh immediately. He is everything this franchise has been chasing for 15 years to finally stabilize and get back on track,” Asman posted.
Social Media Set Ablaze With Harbaugh Replacing Glenn Chatter
“I know the chances are extremely slim to none, but if Woody Johnson gets word that John Harbaugh would be interested in the Jets job, it’s an absolute no brainer to cut ties with Aaron Glenn and hire Harbaugh,” Optimistic Jets posted on social media.
“The Jets should fire Aaron Glenn immediately and hire John Harbaugh,” Fox Sports radio host Jared Smith wrote.
“If New York Jets ownership had any common sense at all, they’d fire Aaron Glenn tonight and hire John Harbaugh tomorrow. He’s exactly what that organization needs,” a fan reacted.
Harbaugh Has a Hall of Fame Type Resume
Head coach Aaron Glenn just delivered one of the worst seasons in franchise history. The initial belief is the Jets will stick with him heading into year No. 2.
However, a coach of Harbaugh’s level and with his credentials becoming available is very rare. He has been the head coach of the Ravens for the last 18 years.
During that stretch, Harbaugh has won a Super Bowl and a Coach of the Year award. Harbaugh owns a .614 winning percentage (180-113) as an NFL head coach.
13 of his 18 seasons as a head coach have resulted in an above .500 season. That includes 11 double-digit win campaigns.
Glenn has never been an NFL head coach before. The first year was a disaster, and it’s a huge mystery if he will ever be able to figure it out. With a guy like Harbaugh, you already know he is a successful coach.
A Risky Proposition for the Jets to Dance With
The problem is that the Jets wouldn’t be the only team interested in Harbaugh’s services.
Harbaugh is going to be the top name on every NFL team’s head coaching list in the NFL who currently has a vacancy, and maybe for teams that are thinking about making a change.
If you’re the Jets, do you want to rock the boat? Would you fire Glenn for the chance to pursue Harbaugh? What if you don’t get him? Now what?
What if you try to sneakily find out through the grapevines if Harbaugh would be interested, while still employing Glenn? What happens if that information leaks out and you miss out on Harbaugh?
That could be an even bigger disaster. The Jets have a lot to think about.
