More Info on the Jets’ Newest Addition
Black, 23, entered the NFL as the No. 246 overall pick in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft.
The selection of Black was considered a big steal for the Giants at the time. NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein graded him as a fifth-round draft choice.
“Three-year starting cornerback with good size and great speed. Black played in all coverage schemes but needs more polish in press and off-man. He’s not bad at matching route breaks and releases, and he can be smothering at the catch point when his route anticipation is on. He plays with eye balance and readiness from zone but needs to trust his instincts. His difficulty finding and playing the football with his back to the quarterback is an issue, though,” Zierlein explained in Black’s pre-draft NFL combine profile.
Jets senior reporter Eric Allen said Black “made the Giants‘ initial 53-man roster but was waived on Wednesday.
After Black cleared waivers, he was free to sign wherever he wanted as a true unrestricted free agent.
“Black (6-0, 192) was a seventh-round pick (No. 246 overall) of the Giants in last April’s NFL Draft. He played 62 games at Oklahoma State, recording 100 tackles, 25 PD, 4 INT, 3 FR and 2 FF. As a super senior in 2024, Black totaled 36 tackles, 12 PDs and 3 INT,” Allen posted via a press release.
Latest on the Jets Practice Squad Numbers
The green and white now have 15 of their 17 practice squad spots accounted for. Most NFL teams are only allowed to have 16 players on their practice squad. However, the Jets have a player from the NFL’s international pathway program and thus receive a roster exemption.
That player for the Jets is German big man Leander Wiegand.
The Jets still have two available roster spots on the practice squad to use ahead of the 2025 season.
Interesting Observation About the Jets Roster
On Tuesday, August 26, the Jets, like every team in the NFL, had to reduce its roster from 90 players to 53.
One of those tough decisions the Jets made was releasing wide receiver Brandon Smith. He was a fan favorite who made plenty of plays in the preseason.
After the wild, wild west of the waiver wire period and roster movement, the Jets announced that they had signed Smith to the practice squad.
On Friday, August 29, Smith is no longer listed on the practice squad but rather the 53-man roster on the online roster sheet.
The Jets currently have 54 players listed on the 53-man roster. That is either a mistake by the Jets‘ digital media staff or indicates that a corresponding roster move will be announced on Friday, August 29, to reflect this change.
Smith took to Instagram and posted a stock up emoji, seemingly confirming the good news, but no official word has been posted yet.
***UPDATE*** The Jets have now listed Smith as a member of the practice squad after initially listing him on the 53-man roster.
