Kyler Murray scrambles with the football against the Steelers in 2019.

Veteran quarterback Kyler Murray is now a free agent. After being released by the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday, the two-time Pro-Bowler is looking for his next destination. One team that is still looking for an answer at the quarterback position is the Pittsburgh Steelers. While future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers had a solid 2025 season, it is unknown whether or not he wants to return to play for a 22nd career season.

As Murray searches for his new team, he has reportedly finalized a short list of teams that he is speaking with this week. According to NFL Network insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, Murray has both spoken and will speak with 3-5 teams via Zoom this week.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Could Have a Chance to Sign Kyler Murray

While Rodgers may have the inside track to becoming the Steelers’ starting quarterback once again in 2026 due to his relationship with new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, perhaps Pittsburgh is tired of waiting around for an answer. Despite Rodgers being arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, Murray’s youth and ability may be more appealing than Rodgers’s football IQ.

Still just 28 years of age, the former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year showed flashes of brilliance with the Cardinals in seven seasons after being drafted first overall back in 2019. He has recorded three seasons of at least 3,000 yards passing and 500 yards rushing. However, after just one playoff appearance, it is clear that both parties should go their separate ways.

Perhaps his dual-threat capabilities could have piqued the interest of Pittsburgh. This is why GM Omar Khan may be one of the general managers who have spoken or will speak to Murray via Zoom this week.

The Steelers Are Looking to Become an Offensive Team with Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy

While former Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin had a remarkable 19-year run in the Steel City, which saw him post a .500-or-better record in all 19 seasons (NFL record), his time came to an end this offseason. The hiring of Mike McCarthy signified Pittsburgh’s decision to go from a defensive team to an offensive team.

As a head coach in both Green Bay and Dallas, McCarthy developed the ability to coach elite quarterbacks and prolific offenses. Throughout his entire 34-year NFL coaching career, he has been around quarterbacks such as Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Dak Prescott, and Alex Smith. Now, he may have the opportunity to coach Rodgers again. From the time that Rodgers was named the starter in Green Bay to the time McCarthy was let go (2008-2018), the Packers made eight playoff appearances and won five NFC North titles, along with a Super Bowl.

While Murray could be the more attractive option due to his youth and nimble capabilities, Pittsburgh might be content to continue to wait on Rodgers. After all, he did lead the team to its first AFC North title in five seasons.
