The Seattle Seahawks announced signing safety Jerrick Reed to the active roster a day before the New Orleans Saints in Week 3.

Former third-round safety Jerrick Reed has played 15 games for the Seattle Seahawks in his two-year NFL career. Reed will dress for his first Seahawks contest this season in Week 3 versus the New Orleans Saints.

The Seahawks announced Saturday they have signed Reed to the active roster for Week 3. Reed is filling an open roster spot the team had from the release of receiver Cody White.

Also for the Saints matchup, the Seahawks announced elevating safety D’Anthony Bell and running back Jacardia Wright. Seattle elevated each player from the practice squad to its active roster.

Although NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport previously reported the transaction, the Seahawks also made the addition of guard Shane Lemieux to the practice squad official Saturday.

Seahawks Sign Safety Jerrick Reed

With the addition of Reed, the Seahawks have five safeties (likely four for Week 3) on their active roster. That’s not even counting Bell, who will also provide secondary depth as a practice squad elevation.

It’s interesting that Seattle appears to want additional safety depth for Week 3. Starting safeties Coby Bryant and Julian Love have each played every defensive snap through the first two games this season.

Bryant and Love can each play slot cornerback. That gives other safeties an opportunity in the back end of Seattle’s secondary.

But Bryant and Love predominantly play safety, which makes having six players available at the position an interesting game day decision.

It’s also not really allowed second-round rookie safety Nick Emmanwori much of an opportunity for playing time. Emmanwori has lined up for just four overall defensive snaps in the first two games.

Emmanwori, though, isn’t likely to play in Week 3. The Seahawks listed the rookie as doubtful for the Saints matchup.

Bell and fellow safety Ty Okada have each played more than Emmanwori this season but not by much. Okada has received 15 defensive snaps while Bell has played 12 snaps.

Reed posted three combined tackles — two solos and one assist — while predominantly playing special teams in 2024. He lined up for five defensive snaps and 80 special teams snaps during five games last season.

As a rookie in 2023, Reed played 29 defensive snaps and 157 snaps on special teams. In 15 total games, he has registered 14 combined tackles.

The Seahawks drafted Reed at No. 198 overall in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Seahawks Add WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba to Injury Report

While the move was reported two days ago, Lemieux will join the Seahawks practice squad without another corresponding move. With Reed heading to the Seattle active roster, the team had an open practice squad spot.

In a final roster move Saturday, the Seahawks added wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba to the injury report. He is officially listed as questionable because of an illness.

Smith-Njigba, who has practiced every day this week, could be a significant loss. The Seahawks game planned the entire week for the Pro Bowl wideout to play.

To open the 2025 campaign, Smith-Njigba has posted at least eight catches and more than 100 receiving yards in Weeks 1 and 2.

The Seahawks will enter Week 3 with an even 1-1 record. They will host the 0-2 Saints on Sunday at 1:05 pm PT.
