The Chicago Blackhawks finally got a much needed win in yesterday’s 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues. This broke a three game losing streak for the team after a rough opening road trip to begin the season. The big story of the squad’s home opener was the return of Patrick Kane to Chicago. This was his first home game at the United Center since prior to his trade from the team in 2023.

Kane Reflects on First Home Game Back in Chicago

Kane shared his reaction to the Chicago return game in his postgame interview: “Yeah, it was special. I mean obviously a lot of build up to the night and coming out for warmups hearing the cheers. And getting ready to go out for introductions was definitely a little emotional. You’re kind of skating up the ice and its surreal. Did not know if I would have the chance to do that again, so it’s pretty special.”

The Blackhawks pulled out all the stops for Kane’s first home game back with the team, which just happened to be exactly 19 years after the date of his NHL debut in Chicago. The pregame festivities and introductions for Kane brought out a major reaction from a crowd that was clearly amped to have him back in town. Perhaps, this was the infusion of energy the team needed as they ticked off that first win of the campaign.

Youth Players Made the Difference in Chicago’s Home Opener

While it was Kane’s night, he was not the standout performer for the Blackhawks in this game. He had his fair share of opportunities, but was not able to convert on them. It was the young guns who made their mark with Anton Frondell and Artyom Levshunov standing out in particular. The two top three draft picks connected on a highlight-reel goal, in which Levshunov drove the play and found Frondell who buried the look. Sam Rinzel also got on the board after what had been a tough start of the season for the 22 year old defenseman. These are the type of plays the Blackhawks are going to need from their youth players if this rebuild is to pay off in the long run.

While last night was an encouraging performance for this young Blackhawks team, there is still plenty this group needs to clean up if they are going to take that next step this season. The defensive play from the team has been the biggest issue so far with the inexperience of their blueline showing in the early days of the season. Starting goaltender Spencer Knight has had to stand on his head to keep his team in the games, which may not be sustainable over the course of the campaign.

With that said, this opening stretch was always going to be difficult for Chicago without their new captain: Connor Bedard. If the team can survive this period without him, they could be poised for greater success when he comes back from injury. It will be interesting to see if this past game leads to momentum for the team moving forward.
