Matchday 1 of the 2026-27 English Premier League season continues on Sunday, August 23. One of the biggest fixtures of the week is Newcastle vs. Liverpool at St. James Park.
It’s a new day for Liverpool under new manager Andoni Iraola, who replaced Enzo Maresca this summer. Iraola helped Bournemouth secure their first European qualification last season after an 18-game unbeaten run to end the season.
Meanwhile, Newcastle also has a new manager at the helm in Matthias Jaissle. It will be his first foray into a big club, having previously managed Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.

Liverpool finished last season in fifth place, failing to defend the Premier League title. They were off to a hot start before going through a difficult period under then-manager Arne Slot.
This will be their first season since 2016 without Mohamed Salah, who left the club after nine seasons.
On the other hand, Newcastle lost some key players in the summer transfer window. Anthony Gordon joined Barcelona, Sandro Tonali went to Tottenham and Bruno Guimaraes signed with Arsenal.
The Magpies used the money earned from the transfers to bring in players such as Aladji Bamba, Amar Dedic, Bazoumana Toure, Ewen Jaouen, Lukas Hornicek and Sean Steur.
