UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski provided the latest update on his return to the Octagon later this year.
Volkanovski last fought in February at UFC 325, when he defeated Diego Lopes in a rematch to defend the UFC featherweight title that he won when he beat Lopes in a vacant title bout last April at UFC 314.
Most fans expect that Volkanovski’s next title defense will come against No. 1 contender Movsar Evloev, who is 10-0 in the UFC and who has been patiently waiting for a title shot. But up to this point, the UFC has not booked the fight.
However, Volkanovski expects news to drop soon.
Alexander Volkanovski Expects to Fight Movsar Evloev Next
Speaking on his YouTube channel in a training video filmed in Thailand, Volkanovski said that he hopes to get fight news soon, and he believes that his next opponent will be Evloev.
“It’s not locked in, but it’s pretty obvious it’s probably going to be Movsar. So, get all that wrestling in nice and early,” Volkanovski said.
Movsar Evloev Has Been Patiently Waiting for a Title Shot
When you talk about UFC fighters who have been waiting a long time for a title shot without getting one, Evloev has to be at the top of the list, as he is a perfect 10-0 inside the Octagon and 20-0 in his MMA career. Yet, for whatever reason, the UFC has not given him the chance to fight for 145 lbs gold yet.
The fact that Evloev has zero finishes in 10 UFC wins likely has a lot to do with that, as the UFC typically prefers giving title shots to fighters who finish fights. But you cannot deny what Evloev has done inside the Octagon as far as his success goes, and he truly deserves the chance to fight for the belt next.
Hopefully, the UFC can get this fight between Volkanovski and Evloev booked soon, perhaps in the main event for UFC 332 or UFC 333, which are slated to take place in October, in Utah and Abu Dhabi, respectively. If it happens, look for the fight to headline one of those numbered events.
