Colby Covington Shares Georges St-Pierre-RAF Update

Colby Covington claims a wrestling match with Georges St-Pierre in RAF appears to be more realistic than ever. He said St-Pierre has been in contact with Real American Freestyle’s management and could accept his challenge.

After his dominant victory over Luke Rockhold in his RAF debut, Covington expressed interest in wrestling St-Pierre. He issued a challenge and noted that they both sit No. 1 and No. 2 for most takedowns in the UFC’s welterweight division.

‘Rush,’ long retired, previously agreed to return to competition for grappling events under the UFC banner. However, that never materialized after he sustained an injury while preparing. Now, RAF could be another outlet for St-Pierre to return to competition.

During an exclusive interview with Heavy Sports, Covington shared a positive update on the St-Pierre’s status with RAF.

Colby Covington Says Georges St-Pierre is in Negotiations with RAF

Colby Covington revealed that Georges St-Pierre has been in early negotiations with RAF for a potential wrestling match. Covington is 1-0 in RAF and aims to improve to 2-0 when he faces Dillon Danis at RAF 07 this Saturday.

Another impressive performance could put add more interest for a potential clash with St-Pierre. ‘Chaos’ feels that while ‘Rush’ has been retired from fighting, he may still have interest in competing. He noted that RAF CEO Chad Bronstein has spoken with the Canadian and gauged his interest.

Following those conversations, Covington said he believes St-Pierre has a renewed desire to compete.

“It’s definitely realistic. [St-Pierre has] had some calls with the CEO of Real American Freestyle, Chad Bronstein. So I know Chad’s been on the phone with ‘GSP,’ and they’re trying to get it worked out,” Covington exclusively told Heavy Sports. “It’s funny because right after that, ‘GSP’ was in the wrestling room with his wrestling coach, and he had his wrestling shoes on again. It looked like he was training.”

He added:

“[St-Pierre is] the GOAT, he’s the No. 1 greatest welterweight in history,” he said. “I just want to challenge myself against the best and that’s what RAF is about.”

Covington Wants to Test Himself Against St-Pierre

Covington also explained that he wants to face St-Pierre in a wrestling match is because he wants to test himself. He acknowledged the Canadian’s wrestling skills and considers the greatest welterweight of all time.

Covington said he is willing to wait for St-Pierre and give him all the time he needs to prepare. In addition, he also proposed that RAF host their wrestling match in Canada, giving ‘Rush’ the home advantage.

“If we have to lure ‘GSP’ out and we need to go to Canada, I mean, I know it’s expensive, but we’re willing to go to Canada. We’ll get this done in his backyard. Wherever he picks. He can pick the place, date, and time,” Covington said. “It would be a dream come true for me.”

He continued:

“[St-Pierre] might need a little bit of time to get ready, a couple months to go through a training camp, and get his body acclimated to the training schedule and make sure his body is in tip-top shape again.”
