Schultz will serve as the opening pitcher in Friday's game against the Padres, Kyle Williams of TheBanner.com reports. Schultz has performed well overall this season, but his ERA remains inflated at 5.30 through 18.2 frames following his six-earned-run encounter with the Mets on May 18 that lasted just one-third of an inning. He's now set for his first opening assignment of the campaign and is likely to remain in the game for an inning or two before handing the game over to Andrew Alvarez, who's expected to handle bulk-relief duties.

Paxton Schultz: Breaking News
Woeful outing Monday
Schultz (0-1) was tagged with the loss Monday against the Mets after allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits and a walk over one-third of an inning. Schultz entered the game in the 11th inning but couldn't get the job done. Even though he retired the first batter he faced on a sac bunt, Schultz allowed six straight baserunners before departing the contest. The game was so out of reach by the time he was lifted that manager Blake Butera decided to send third baseman Jorbit Vivas to pitch the rest of the way instead of deploying another arm out of the bullpen. Schultz had given up just five earned runs in his previous 13 appearances (17.2 innings) this season, but this was likely a one-off, disastrous outing for the second-year right-hander.
Collects first major-league save
Schultz earned the save in the Nationals' 2-1 extra-inning win over the White Sox on Sunday, allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out two in the 10th frame. Gus Varland and Richard Lovelady were deployed in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, which prompted the Nationals to turn to Schultz to protect the team's 2-0 lead. A Tristan Peters RBI single brought home the White Sox's ghost runner in the 10th inning, but Schultz shut the door by striking out the next two batters he faced to come away with the first save of his major-league career. Varland blew his save chance Saturday, and given that he pitched in the eighth inning of Sunday's game, Schultz might be in the mix for save opportunities for as long as Clayton Beeter (forearm) is on the 15-day injured list.
