Penn Says Frankie Edgar Rematch Is “In The Works”

It looks as if lightweight contenders Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard will have to wait a little longer for their title shot.

According to B.J. Penn he is in line for a rematch to avenge his loss to Frankie Edgar at UFC 112 last Saturday.

Penn said on his web site, bjpenn.com that nothing is official right now but a rematch with Edgar is already in the works.

“The UFC called us yesterday, and there’s probably a rematch in the works with Frankie Edgar,” Penn said in a short video posted on his official Web site. “(It’s) still tentative, but it looks like they want to do the fight again. So we’ll see what’s going on. (I) just wanted to give you guys a heads-up.”

The UFC has not always been quick to grant former champions with an immediate rematch in the past but Penn could be considered a special case. Penn has dominated the lightweight division for close to a decade. His loss to Edgar was his first at 155 pounds in eight years.

Reports say that Maynard and Florian still remain possibilities to face Edgar but the smart money is on Penn getting a shot to regain his lightweight title in the near future.
