Ciarlo (knee) reverted to the Jets' injured reserve list Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. He'll now have to miss the entirety of the 2024 campaign unless he can reach an injury settlement with the Jets. Fellow rookie Jackson Sirmon could see an uptick in practice reps with Ciarlo out of the way.
Barnes (hamstring) recorded four tackles (two solo) in Saturday's 20-17 preseason loss to the Jets. Barnes played 38 snaps (25 on defense, 13 on special teams) in Saturday's contest. He played 32 snaps -- all on special teams -- across four regular-season outings for the Jets last year, but he missed the end of the season due to a hamstring injury. The 2023 sixth-round pick is competing for a depth spot at outside linebacker behind starters Quincy Williams and Jermaine Johnson.
General manager Joe Douglas released a statement Monday announcing that New York "will not trade" Reddick after his request to be moved. Douglas' statement also confirms "[Reddick] will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report." Jordan Schultz of BleacherReport.com reports that the Jets made a contract offer to Reddick, who has one year remaining on his current deal, prior acquiring him via trade from the Eagles, but that the veteran pass rusher turned that offer down. Reddick has since held out of minicamp and training camp, culminating in his trade request Monday. Unless one side becomes willing to budge, it appears that Reddick's holdout will continue indefinitely.
Reddick (contract dispute), who is holding out of training camp, informed the Jets on Monday that he wishes to be traded, Jordan Schultz of BleacherReport.com reports. Reddick will almost certainly still want a new deal before suiting up, even if traded to another organization, which figures to complicate any trade negotiations. The 2017 first-round pick has one year remaining on his current deal, but he's declined to attend team activities with New York since joining the club via trade from the Eagles back in March. Reddick is coming off four straight seasons with double-digit sacks, and he was expected to be an integral part of the Jets' defensive front following the departure of Bryce Huff.
The Jets signed Johnson to a contract Sunday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports. Johnson signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent in May, but he was let go by Los Angeles on Tuesday. After clearing waivers, the 23-year-old tight end caught on with the Jets, and he'll look to compete for a depth spot at tight end.
Smith caught both of his targets for 70 yards in Saturday's 20-17 preseason win over the Commanders. Smith showed good chemistry with recent UFL MVP Adrian Martinez in the fourth quarter, as the pair connected for gains of 37 and 33 yards on deep balls. Neither the 25-year-old wide receiver nor the 24-year-old quarterback are likely to land a roster spot with the Jets, but both are realistic practice squad candidates and improved their chances of making it with Saturday's strong performances. Smith should continue to see run with the depth pieces on offense throughout the preseason, with his next chance to take the field coming next Saturday in Carolina.
Abanikanda rushed six times for 17 yards and a touchdown while catching his only target for eight yards in Saturday's 20-17 preseason win over the Commanders. Abanikanda entered in the second half after rookie fourth-round and fifth-round draft picks Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis played the first half. Allen seems to have cemented himself as the top backup to Breece Hall, leaving Davis and Abanikanda in a competition for the third spot on the running back depth chart. Davis has the edge due to his ability to contribute on special teams, but Abanikanda may have bolstered his chances slightly with a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Abanikanda will look to add to his case for a roster spot when the Jets continue preseason play next Saturday in Carolina.
