Rory McIlroy kicked things off at the BMW Championship with a bang. Heading into the second round at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, he shares the lead with a score of 6-under.
The six-time major winner completely turned his game around and is looking much better compared to last week. Last week, he finished with a score of 8-over par.
His practice at home went quite well.
“I worked on a few things and at least got myself back in a frame of mind where like I felt like I’m at least back on the right path of what I’m doing with my game and with my swing,” McIlroy revealed to the press on Aug. 20.
This week’s tournament includes a hole-in-one prize on the par-3 16th. Instead of a generic giveaway, the specific car on offer was chosen by McIlroy.
“Had the choice between two cars and maybe three different colors of each car,” he revealed. “So I picked the car and I picked the color. And I probably won’t get it because it’s a green X5. Might get it. Who knows.”
Rory McIlroy Chose Green as a Nod to His Masters Win
The color choice isn’t random. McIlroy said green has “sort of become my favorite color recently,” a nod to his back-to-back Masters titles and the Green Jacket.
As a longtime BMW brand ambassador, McIlroy’s own personal daily driver is a BMW M5 finished in a shade called Isle of Man Green. He picked the color specifically. It matches the jacket from his second Masters win.
Choosing green for this week’s giveaway car lines up with a theme he’s leaned into since that victory. Furthermore, it’s a natural extension of his broader partnership with BMW, the tournament’s title sponsor.
Rory McIlroy Missed an Important Family Moment This Week
McIlroy had to miss his daughter Poppy’s first day back to school due to the BMW Championship.
He revealed after The Open that her summer break was ongoing and the family was planning a vacation. McIlroy wanted to spend time with her, but the trip was cut short due to the FedExCup Playoffs.
“It’s Poppy’s first day of school today,” McIlroy said. “I would have loved to have been home for that, but I’m here. Just stuff like that, you know, that things I didn’t have 10 years ago that I have these days. I’m in a different spot in my life.”
