The Detroit Tigers had a pretty disappointing 2026 season, which resulted in missing the MLB playoffs and finishing with a 76-86 record (4th plac in th; AL Central).
However, an obvious bright spot for the Tigers was rookie sensation Kevin McGonigle.
In a recent rankings piece for BR.com, McGonigle was named the top rookie in MLB, and the young infielder should be in line to win American League Rookie of the Year.

BR.com’s Joel Reuter wrote about McGonigle being the top rookie in all of Major League Baseball:
“With 7.1 WAR in 156 games, McGonigle was surpassed by only Pete Crow-Armstrong (9.8), Cristopher Sánchez (8.1) and Brice Turang (7.3) among all players during the 2026 season. He also joined Steven Kwan and Geraldo Perdomo as the only players to rank among the 25 highest in walk rate and the 25 lowest in strikeout rate, while further bolstering his value with strong defense at shortstop and third base.”
Here is just a handful of McGonigle’s 2026 stats:
“707 PA, 126 OPS+, .278/.376/.430, 51 XBH (18 HR), 12 SB”
Some of the other names that Reuter mentioned as being top rookies included Nolan McLean, Carson Benge, Sal Stewart, and Parker Messick.
