Yankees call up Kervin Castro

The New York Yankees have made another move to their pitching staff.

New York has had a revolving door in the bullpen this season, as the Yankees have been using plenty of pitchers. On Thursday, the Yankees optioned Yerry De Los Santos and called up Brendan Beck to the MLB roster.

Now, after Thursday’s game, MLB insider Francys Romero revealed the Yankees are set to call up right-handed reliever Kervin Castro.

“The Yankees are also calling up Venezuelan RHP Kervin Castro, who will return to MLB, per sources. Castro, 27, last appeared in MLB in 2022 (Cubs, Giants). He posted a 1-0 record with a 3.14 ERA in 14.1 innings and 10 strikeouts at Scranton Triple-A,” Romero wrote.

Castro is 27-years-old who hasn’t been in the MLB since 2022. He began his MLB career with the San Francisco Giants in 2021 and, in August of 2022, was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs.

The Yankees selected Castro from the Astros in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft on December 6, 2023, and he’s been in the system since then. In November, the Yankees added Castro to their 40-man roster to prevent him from reaching minor league free agency.

In Triple-A this season, Castro has been solid out of the bullpen and will now provide Aaron Boone a fresh arm.

Yankees Fans React to Pitching Move

New York has been shuffling through relief pitchers, and Castro is the latest arm to be recalled.

Following the news that Romero would be recalled, Yankees fans were curious to see how he’d fare.

Anyone but Yovanny Cruz. They gotta have some sort of hate agenda towards him because there’s absolutely no reason why he’s not getting called up,” a fan wrote.

“Castro is only going to be here till rodon is back that’s why it’s not yovanny,” a fan added.

“my guess is that Beck will be sent back to Triple-A,” a fan wrote.

Yankees insider Gary Phillips reported that it is Beck going down to Triple-A as the corresponding move.

“assuming beck going down?,” a fan wrote, which Phillips replied: ‘yeah.”

Beck pitched 3 innings on Thursday in his MLB debut, allowing 2 runs and 3 walks while striking out 1 as he had mixed results out of the bullpen.

New York Calls Up Spencer Jones

The Yankees made another roster move on Thursday.

New York recalled top prospect Spencer Jones after Jasson Dominguez was placed on the injured list. Dominguez was carted off the field after crashing into a wall. He has a low-grade left AC sprain in his left shoulder that will require an IL stint, while concussion tests were negative.

“That could be a few weeks,” Boone told YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits.

Dominguez was able to make the catch, but suffered an injury that will keep him on the sidelines for the foreseeable future. He was hitting .200 with 1 home run and 4 RBIs this season before the injury.

Jones, meanwhile, will be making his MLB debut. He’s a power-hitting outfielder who had a strikeout problem in the minors. He’s hitting .258 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs this season in 120 ABs.
