New York Yankees Make Paul Goldschmidt Decision Before Braves Game
With left-hander Chris Sale starting for the Braves, Paul Goldschmidt is leading off and playing first base for the Yankees on Saturday.

After the Yankees acquired slugging first baseman Luis García Jr. from the Washington Nationals before the trade deadline, it became clear that Goldschmidt would mainly be a platoon bat for the rest of the season. Ben Rice is now New York’s primary designated hitter.
García is out of the lineup on Saturday, but there’s a good chance he will pinch-hit for Goldschmidt late in the game if the Braves bring in a right-handed reliever.
Goldschmidt, 38, has hit .246/.306/.451 with 16 home runs and 44 RBI across 86 games this season. He has a weak .577 OPS against right-handers, but a strong .988 OPS against southpaws.

The Yankees are 5-5 in their last 10 games. Before defeating Atlanta on Friday night, New York lost two of three games against the St. Louis Cardinals at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees will conclude their three-game set with the Braves on Sunday afternoon. After an off day on Monday, New York will begin a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Yankees are the first American League Wild Card team with a 65-51 record. The Boston Red Sox are just half a game back of them in the Wild Card standings.
As for the division standings, New York is 4 1/2 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the American League East.
