The Buffalo Bills continued their perfect start to the 2025 season in Week 4 with a 31-19 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. While winning is always nice, the Bills weren’t able to escape this game unscathed, as their punter, Cameron Johnston, was forced out of the game early with a lower-leg injury.

Buffalo ended up being able to get through this game after Johnston’s early departure, but moving forward, they are going to need another option at the position if he’s forced to miss time. And based on Johnston’s latest injury update, it sounds like the Bills should begin looking to bring in a new punter.

Cameron Johnston Expected to Miss Time with Lower-Leg Injury

Heading into Week 4, it seemed like the Bills vs. the Saints was one of the biggest mismatches in recent memory. Simply put, Buffalo had been one of the best teams in the league through three weeks, while New Orleans had been one of the worst, and they were fresh off a 44-13 thrashing at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3.

And yet, the Saints gave the Bills a run for their money, as they hung in this game for much of the afternoon, even appearing to take a lead at one point, only for a Brandin Cooks touchdown to be overturned after it was determined the football hit the ground before he caught it. At the end of the day, though, a win is a win, even if Buffalo didn’t necessarily play its best game.

The bigger issue is the fact that the Bills will have to find a way to overcome Johnston’s injury. The eight-year veteran has been Buffalo’s punter for the past three games after the team released Brad Robbins in the wake of their Week 1 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, but with Johnston reportedly set to miss time with his injury, the Bills are going to have to find a replacement for him.

Bills punter Cameron Johnston, who suffered a lower-leg injury, is expected to miss some time, sources say,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported in a post on X. “No word yet on IR. But Buffalo will need another punter.”

While Johnston could avoid landing on the injured reserve, it still sounds like he’s in for a multi-game absence at the very least. With that in mind, a new option will be needed at punter, with the Bills likely exploring the free agent market ahead of Week 5. Robbins looms as an obvious option, but it remains to be seen whether or not the team would be open to reuniting with him.

Moving forward, Buffalo will be looking to keep its perfect season alive, as it will take on the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football. The Pats could end up being a tougher opponent than expected, as they just throttled the Carolina Panthers 42-13 in Week 4. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET, and by then, the Bills should have their punter situation figured out.
