David Montgomery has a new teammate on the Houston Texans in Evan Hull.

The Houston Texans found a new addition for their roster during their rookie minicamp, adding Evan Hull to their revamped running back room. Hull is the fifth member of the backfield, but the fourth ball-carrier, with British Brooks at fullback.

The Texans’ decision cost another player their spot, though.

Still, Hull’s signing officially fulfills Texans general manager Nick Caserio’s assertion that they would add another runner to the team before the offseason ended.

The Texans announced that they “signed Evan Hull” in a post on X on May 11, following their official notice on the team’s official website.

Hull entered the league as a fifth-round pick, taken 176th overall in the 2023 draft by the Indianapolis Colts, the Texans’ AFC South rivals. He has rushed for 49 yards on 20 carries, adding two receptions for 12 yards, in eight career games.

Hull has also spent time with the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers.

He joins a group that cut ties with two-time Pro Bowler Joe Mixon this offseason after the latter missed the 2025 campaign with a foot injury.

The Texans replaced Mixon (and his 2025 replacement Nick Chubb) with a trade for David Montgomery, adding him to a group that already had 2025 fourth-round pick Woody Marks and 2024 sixth-round selection Jawhar Jordan, with Brooks on hand if necessary.

Hull and Marks–who dealt with an injury last season–have similar listed physical profiles.

“He should give the Texans depth at RB going into camp,” The Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander posted on X in reaction to the news.

Hull, 25 (26 in October), joins a Texans team that ranked 13th in rushing attempts and 22nd in yards gained on the ground during the 2025 regular season. That was with Chubb, Marks, and, later, Jordan carrying the load.

Montgomery is the only other addition of note, which could be good news for Hull.

Hull’s next challenge is earning a roster spot with the Texans for training camp, which he can do during OTAs starting on May 27.

Texans Part Ways With 2025 Draft Pick Luke Lachey

GettyLuke Lachey was drafted by the Houston Texans in 2025 and is now a free agent.

The Texans had to make room on the 90-man roster for Hull, and tight end Luke Lachey paid the price. Lachey is entering his second season in the NFL. The Texans selected the 6-foot-6 pass-catcher in the seventh round with the 255th pick of the 2025 draft.

Lachey, who turns 25 in June, did not see the field during the regular season as a rookie.

The Texans are deep at tight end, led by 2023 free agent pickup and former Dallas Cowboys pick (2018) Dalton Schultz and including fellow free agent signing (2025) Foster Moreau.

The Texans also drafted Marlin Klein in the second round of the 2026 draft and still have recent selections in Brevin Jordan (2021) and Cade Stover (2024), and former undrafted free agent Layne Pryor.

After dealing with injuries at the position last offseason, the depth is warranted.

The Texans will likely trim the group further, putting options like Pryor and even Jordan and Stover, who have battled injuries, on notice going forward.
