Kansas City Chiefs trade rumors have surrounded All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie in recent weeks, and the latest NFL news supports a popular theory that KC will send the star DB to the Los Angeles Rams ahead of free agency.
“Les Snead sounds like a GM ready to be aggressive to maximize Matthew Stafford’s window,” The Athletic’s Rams beat reporter Nate Atkins relayed on March 3.
Atkins then listed three takeaways from his recent coverage of Snead.
“[The Rams are] open to trading a 1st-rounder for a proven player, secondary [is] a big focus… [and] trade talks are intense this time of year and [Los Angeles is] having them,” Atkins noted.
He also added a quote to the post, which read: “Is there an All-Pro that you could add?”
Needless to say, it almost sounds as if Atkins is describing McDuffie and the Chiefs.
McDuffie is a “proven player” and “All-Pro” defensive back who would likely net a minimum of a first-round pick back in return. He’s also a trade candidate because of the Chiefs’ cap situation, not to mention ongoing extension talks that appear to be at an impasse.
Kansas City general manager Brett Veach has made it clear that the organization would prefer to keep McDuffie and work out a long-term deal. After all, the former first-round pick is only entering his age-26 season, and he’s become an integral part of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s system.
Having said that, McDuffie’s cap hit has risen to over $13.6 million in 2026, and the Chiefs could shed that entire amount by trading him at peak value. Decisions, decisions.
Will Trent McDuffie Become Chiefs’ Next Tyreek Hill or Nick Bolton Amid NFL Trade Rumors?

This could go one of two ways, and fans have seen KC choose each option in the past. The Chiefs have made bombshell trades, like when they sent superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for a haul of draft capital amid extension talks.
That move worked out pretty well, considering Kansas City won two Super Bowls thanks to draft picks like McDuffie, who were products of the deal.
The Chiefs also traded a similarly versatile DB in L’Jarius Sneed, rather than pay him. And they’ve let countless free agents walk after title runs.
On the flip side, KC has made a real effort to retain players that they deem irreplaceable. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce headline that list, but the Chiefs also moved mountains to pay Chris Jones, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, and Nick Bolton.
Bolton was perhaps the most surprising of that group. Most covering the team thought Bolton would cash in elsewhere, but Spagnuolo made sure Veach re-signed his MIKE linebacker.
Will the coaching staff do the same for McDuffie? Like Bolton, McDuffie has developed into a borderline elite-tier player and defensive leader.
He’s not quite Mahomes, Kelce, or Jones, but he is very important to the Chiefs’ chances of returning to the Super Bowl. Will KC make the conscious decision to let him go heading into what could be Kelce’s final season?
Chiefs’ Trent McDuffie News Could Define 2026 Offseason
This McDuffie decision won’t just help shape the entire offseason; it’ll likely define it, too.
When the Chiefs boldly traded Hill to Miami, hitting on those draft picks became paramount. Fortunately, Veach and head coach Andy Reid did just that, betting on their ability to identify and develop talent.
KC has been less successful in the draft in recent years, hence last year’s disaster.
2025 wasn’t all due to failed prospects, but key draft misses like Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Xavier Worthy certainly did not help reinvigorate the franchise. In other words, if the Chiefs trade McDuffie, the risk is not finding the right draft prospects to replace him.
