The New England Patriots have been a little quiet on the free agency front so far. Over 24 hours into the legal tampering window and the biggest moves New England made were the signings of edge rusher Dre’Mont Jones and G Alijah Vera-Tucker. Those are two good players who make the Patriots a better team with their presence on the roster, but New England hasn’t yet made the splash move everyone expected — specifically at one position.
It’s no secret that the Patriots want to make a big move at wide receiver, and their need there intensified after they released last season’s leading receiver, Stefon Diggs. The elephant in the room is Eagles WR A.J. Brown. After some speculation that Brown may be on the move around last season’s trade deadline, he stayed put in Philadelphia, but his frustration with the Eagles’ inconsistent offense is well documented, and the Eagles have seemed willing to part with him for the right price.
The Patriots have been consistently linked as the most likely team to pursue a trade for Brown, but the Eagles have been maintaining their high asking price. An NFL insider just provided an update on New England’s chances.

NFL Network insider Cameron Wolfe provided an update on the Patriots’ pursuit of Brown on Tuesday afternoon.
“Well the Patriots have been very active trying to find a new WR1,” Wolfe said on NFL Network’s Free Agency Frenzy show. “And look, I am told that the conversations around A.J. Brown are not dead yet. I think their number one priority, if they had a choice, would be to figure out a way to trade for Eagles receiver A.J. Brown.”
“But my understanding is that the Eagles’ asking price is still very high and so right now there is not much common ground right now on a deal,” Wolfe continued. “That could change in the coming days, so that’s the one I’m keeping an eye on. I also checked in on Stefon Diggs — is there any chance they would bring him back? It sounds like that’s a no at this stage. They liked what he did for them last year, it was a cost over value thing, but they are hoping to get a number one receiver who’s a little younger, a little bit more trending upward in his career.”
NFL Insider on Other Receiver Options for the New England Patriots
“I asked a little bit about receivers to try and get a gauge on where they were at receiver,” Wolfe said. “I know they like [Packers WR] Romeo Doubs: he’s an intriguing option for them, but again I think their number one priority might be the trade market and see if they can get somebody [like] A.J. Brown or someone else in that area. So keep your eyes peeled in the next couple of days and see if the Patriots can land their guy at wide receiver.”
