Things can change on a dime.
On Wednesday, August 5, the New York Jets signed defensive tackle Patrick Jenkins. 24 hours later, they are waiving him goodbye. Get it? Waiving = waving? I’ll be here all week.
NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY was first to share the news on social media. They moved on from Jenkins after claiming DT Junior Tafuna from the Houston Texans.
Jenkins hasn’t had much experience at the NFL level. Last year, he went undrafted. Jenkins was with the Arizona Cardinals from post-draft until final roster cuts. He spent several months on the couch and then he joined the Atlanta Falcons at the end of the season.
Most recently, he was on the Columbus Aviators of the United Football League.
Some Good News From Coach
There have been a few rookies for the Jets who have missed time this offseason. That group includes Kenyon Sadiq and D’Angelo Ponds.
Brian Costello of the New York Post asked head coach Aaron Glenn if there is a point at which he starts to get nervous about the amount of time these young players have missed.
“You know what, the way that we do our install schedule is in phase two, we go over the whole system, and then right when we get out in phase three, when we get on the field, we go over it again. So, he’s actually had the install two times and, obviously, he’s in meetings now. Now, it’s nothing like doing it on the field, which we’ve got to see, but I’m not concerned with that player at all. Again, he’s a smart player, he knows exactly what he’s doing. The thing is he’s playing inside and outside, but he’ll be just fine,” Glenn responded specifically about Ponds.
While in this particular example, Glenn was talking about Ponds, he might as well have been talking about Sadiq as well.
One of the big concerns about Sadiq’s extended absence this offseason was his ability to be ready to go when he is eventually on the field. The former Oregon product missed the final week of OTAs, all of mandatory minicamp, and now he is set to miss extended time in training camp.
Glenn assured the media that Sadiq will be ready for Week 1. The looming question is, let’s say that’s true, what version of Sadiq will the Jets be getting for the season opener?
It sounds like mentally, Sadiq will be ready to go, which is a huge step.
Update on the Jets Kicking Competition
The green and white have a few positional battles worth watching in training camp. One that has been surprisingly closer than most expected is at placekicker.
The Optimistic Jets account revealed the kicking competition total stats through the entirety of training camp:
- Jason Sanders: 26-of-31
- Cade York: 25-of-29

Highly competitive battle that will become more clear throughout training camp and the preseason
ESPN’s Rich Cimini said on the “Jets Collective” podcast that Sanders is the projected favorite to win this gig, but it’s too tight and too early to tell how all of this is going to play out.
