What a roller coaster.
The New York Jets signed defensive tackle Patrick Jenkins. 24 hours later, they cut him. 24 hours after that, Jenkins was claimed by the Cleveland Browns on waivers, giving him a new NFL home amid training camp.
Zac Jackson of The Athletic confirmed the news on X.
No Cause for Concern
The Jets had training camp practice on Friday, August 7. However, there were some noticeable players absent from the practice field.
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic revealed that linebacker Demario Davis, defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, and defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick “all had a vet rest day today.”
Head coach Aaron Glenn recently explained that there is a method to their madness.
“My job is to acclimate our players to get ready for the regular season, so what we try to do is, and I showed them a graph to where the first week, the highest amount of reps we get is 24 reps, and then we’re going to recover; then we’ll bring it down. So, we had two practices on and then we bring it down for recovery, and then it jumps back up. So, the next week the highest amount of reps we’ll have is 32, alright, and then we’ll recover again,” Glenn told the media.
“Then the next week the highest amount of reps will be 40, so what I’m trying to do is get our guys to be ready to play 65-75 plays a game and that’s my job as a coach to be able to do that, so each week you’ll start to see those reps go up, you start to see that yardage that they have to have, and that’s the analytics part of it, yardage will go up also. And that’s what I try to create, so when you say the day off and the days on, you’ll see it go like this here (points up), and that’s the reason why, man, I’m trying to get max reps then I’m trying to recover. Max reps, then recover. Hopefully that makes sense,” Glenn explained.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini described this strategy as “load management” by the Jets.
Making the Hall of Fame Case
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell revealed which players on every team in the NFL have a shot at eventually getting enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Some players were considered locks, others were on their way, and others still needed more work. Well, for the Jets, no one made the list.
Garrett Wilson was listed in the “work to do” category.
“The 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Wilson’s work on the path to enshrinement might entail trying to find a quarterback who will play at a high level and stick around for more than a year in New York. Playing with everyone from Zach Wilson to Chris Streveler, Wilson has made spectacular catches, but he is yet to top 1,200 receiving yards in a single season or make it to a Pro Bowl. He is capable of running off a bunch of consecutive Pro Bowl nods, but he has to get some help,” Barnwell wrote.
