Eagles Throw A Block Party In South Philly And Write Cover To Cover Comeback Classic For The Ages

I had a feeling I was going to have a breakout day against the Rams and I certainly have to share the love with my teammates because I actually put up more passing yards in the first half than the Philadelphia Eagles did today.  The Philly offense finished the horrifically painful first 30 minutes today with (- 1) yard passing.  Jalen Hurts was an eye-popping 4/8 for 17 yards while the Rams pretty much smashed the Birds outgaining them 212-33 over the first two quarters.  It was the worst offesnvie output in a half in head coach Nick Sirianni’s tenure in Philadelphia – 22 plays, 33 yards.  If Rams‘ quarterback Matt Stafford didn’t miss so many wide open guys the halftime score would have been much worse than just 19-7.  Saquon Barkley, who averaged 230 yards in the two wins over the Rams last year took a stat line of seven carries for 13 yards into the haltime lockeroom.

The second half didn’t start much better for the Birds as the Rams Jared Verse drilled Hurts on the second play from scrimmage and caused a turnover that his team cashed in on one play later, a 10 yard pass from Stafford to Kyren Williams to give the Rams a 19 point lead.

Tale of Two Halves

But then Jalen Hurts and the offense flipped some sort of switch that we hadn’t see so far this season.  Facing 2nd and 13 from their own 39 it took the Birds just two plays to strike back, a 38 yard strike to A.J. Brown followed by a 33 yard seam pass to a wide open Dallas Goedert to cut the Rams lead back down to 12, 26-14.

After the Eagles forced a Rams punt after just four plays, they went 87 yards on 13 plays in 6:27 that ended in a nine yard touchdown pass from Hurts to Brown.  Brown exploded in the second half hauling in six grabs for 109 yards on 10 targets and one touchdown.  So all of the sudden this nightmare of a start for the champs became a war of attrition as the Birds cut the lead to 26-21 with just over two minutes still remaining in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter will be remembered as one for the ages as Jalen Carter would block a Joshua Karty 36 yard field goal attemp that would have given the Rams an eight point lead midway through the final quarter of regulation.  Carter would draw a taunting penalty after the play though to set his team back to their own nine yard line having to go 91 yards with 8:42 to go on the fourth quarter clock to take the lead.

It’s Just What The Eph I Do

But Jalen Hurts is the reigning Super Bowl MVP and he prooved why today in the 2nd half of this one, especially on his final drive of the game with the outcome lying squarley on his right shoulder.  The first two plays went no where but then facing a third an 10 from their own nine, Hurts went back to Brown who hauled in the pass near the left sideline, broke a tackle, and scampered 25 yards to give the Birds life and a new set of downs at their 34 yard line.  A few plays later on another critical third and 10, Hurts and Brown hooked up again for 23 yards giving the Eagles a first down at the Rams 15 yard line.

Super Bowl MVP For A Reason

The game would ultimately come down to a fourth and goal at the L.A. four yard line with 1:48 to go.  That’s when Hurts dialed up his other go-to guy, Devonta Smith, who ran a tight five yard out and caught Hurts’ laser just inside the goal line to give the Birds their first lead of the game since they led 7-0 early in the first quarter.  But the two-point attempt went awry and left the Birds clinging to a one point lead and the Rams beginning their final drive at their own 30 yard line needing just a field goal to win it.

From there it was the Matthew Stafford and Puka Nacua show.  L.A. went right down the field in 10 plays to put the ball on their second year kicker’s foot.  Karty was 4/4 on the day until his previous kick was blocked, but with just :03 left on the clock he lined up again to give his team a hard fought road win with a 44-yard attempt.  But fate would strike again as one of the other Georgia boys would get one of his paws up and not only block Karty’s game-winning attempt, but then pick the ball up and take it back 61 yards to the house to cash up any Eagles fans that laid the 3.5, for one of the most unlikely win and covers that you will ever see.  The Eagles beat the Rams in a comeback thriller for the ages 33-26.  Philly remains unbeaten on the year with a perfect 3-0 record after three games this season as the Rams fall to 2-1.
