Jorge Masvidal recently fueled fight speculation, teasing a potential showdown with Conor McGregor at the UFC’s upcoming White House event. Masvidal hinted at a comeback and explained why the White House would make sense.
The fight would come as a surprise, especially considering McGregor has been linked to a fight with Michael Chandler. The two coached on The Ultimate Fighter and later had a fight schedule, but it fell through due to ‘The Notorious’ injury. Still, the idea of Masvidal vs. McGregor isn’t entirely far-fetched.
Both UFC stars have gone back-and-forth, with Masvidal previously saying McGregor was too small. A fight between the two would be contested at welterweight, which could give ‘Gamebred’ an advantage.
Masvidal last competed at UFC 287 in 2023, losing a unanimous decision to Gilbert Burns. He announced his retirement after the fight but left the door open for a potential return.
Meanwhile, McGregor last fought at UFC 264 in 2021, losing via 1st round TKO to Dustin Poirier. The stoppage came after a broken leg forced the cageside doctor to end the fight.
Jorge Masvidal Teases Conor McGregor Bout
Jorge Masvidal teased that his opponent could be Conor McGregor after saying he has exciting news coming very soon.
During an appearance on MMA Junkie Radio, Masvidal revealed he is training for a major bout. However, he didn’t specify whether McGregor is involved.
“Some of [this] is like level-five only access, so I can’t really say too much, but I am training for something big,” Masvidal said. “You never know. Give ’em what they want, not what they expect. I can say it’s some big news, I have some fight news and it’s very big news.”
He added:
“I can’t deny or confirm [whether McGregor is the opponent] right now, but maybe hopefully soon, I can,” Masvidal said. “Maybe ten days, something like that, I should have more confirmation on it.”
Masvidal’s comments come after UFC CEO Dana White said that he is no longer interested in McGregor vs. Chandler.
Masvidal Explains Significance of Fighting at the White House
Masvidal also explained why competing at the White House would be personally meaningful. ‘Gamebred’ has previously appeared on the campaign trial for President Donald Trump, giving him a strong rapport with him.
Masvidal spoke about his family background and said representing the Latin community on such a historic card would be gratifying. Despite mixed opinions among fighters about competing on the card, ‘Gamebred’ emphasized that it would be a honor.
“I get it if people don’t want to fight for the elitists or however they distribute the tickets, but I just want to fight at the White House,” Masvidal told MMA Junkie Radio. “I’m a Latin [expletive] from immigrant parents on both sides, putting my crafts and skills on display, at the highest level on the White House lawn. Who’s ever done that?'”
He added:
“It should be a great honor for me and also to represent my Latin community, because sometimes they label us [expletive] that we ain’t,” Masvidal said. “I wouldn’t mind getting our there, [expletive] doing my thing on the White House, and that’s the only fight I come back for, honestly.”
