Chandler Simpson: Breaking News

Simpson was removed from Friday's game against the Marlins with left thumb discomfort, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The severity of Simpson's injury remains unclear, but the Rays may provide an update on his status shortly after Friday's contest. Ryan Vilade and Victor Mesa would likely operate as Tampa Bay's corner outfielders if Simpson needs to miss additional time.

Simpson (mouth) is starting in left field and batting leadoff Tuesday against the Tigers, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports. The 25-year-old departed Monday's contest due to a busted lip after his helmet popped off and hit him in the face while he was running the bases, but he's back in the starting nine a day later. Simpson hit out of the No. 5 hole the past four games but will return to the leadoff spot, where he has a .271/.305/.323 slash line in 142 plate appearances this season.

Manager Kevin Cash said after Monday's 10-9 loss to the Tigers that Simpson (mouth) is expected to play Tuesday against Detroit, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports. Simpson was removed from Monday's contest after he sustained a busted lip when his helmet fell off and came up to strike him in the mouth. Simpson required stitches but is otherwise fine. He went 1-for-2 with a single prior to leaving Monday.
