Castillo had been playing in the Mexican League for Algodoneros de Union Laguna. The 28-year-old utility player is a career .208/.257/.383 hitter over parts of three big-league seasons. Castillo last appeared in the majors in 2024 with the Twins.

The Mets signed Castillo to a minor-league contract March 13. Castillo spent most of the 2024 season at the Triple-A level in the Orioles' and Twins' organizations, hitting .261/.364/.397 across 113 contests. He'll give the Mets some utility player depth at Triple-A Syracuse.
