Mason McCoy: Breaking News

The Padres optioned McCoy to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. McCoy has struggled with the bat this spring, slashing a meager .154/.214/.231 through 18 games. He has a paltry .494 OPS through his first 43 MLB contests, so it remains to be seen if he'll ever hit well enough to stick in the big leagues. McCoy did look better with El Paso last season, slashing .272/.354/.450 with 11 home runs, 59 RBI and 17 stolen bases across 90 contests.

McCoy went 1-for-4 with a walk, one RBI, one stolen base and one run scored in Saturday's 10-8 win over the Rockies. McCoy started for just the second time in eight games since he was called up from Triple-A El Paso in late August. The infielder hasn't been able to supplant Jose Iglesias from the starting lineup on a regular basis, though McCoy has drawn both of his starts against right-handed pitchers despite being a righty hitter. His hit Saturday was his first of the season to go along with a 1:6 BB:K over 13 plate appearances, so he hasn't shown enough yet to push for a regular role.

The Padres recalled McCoy from Triple-A El Paso on Friday. McCoy will fill in for Xander Bogaerts (foot), who's being placed on the 10-day injured list. McCoy has gone hitless in five plate appearances with the Padres this season, but he's logged an .804 OPS with 11 homers and 17 stolen bases with El Paso. McCoy will likely compete with Jose Iglesias for starts at the shortstop position.
