The Rockies traded Lopez to the Cubs on Thursday in exchange for cash. Lopez has been at Triple-A Albuquerque all season and has taken advantage of the hitter-friendly environment of the Pacific Coast League to slash .333/.387/.519 with eight RBI and 11 runs scored through 62 plate appearances. He wasn't on Colorado's 40-man roster, so he won't take up a roster spot upon moving to Chicago, but he's an option to return to the majors as an infield depth piece at some point.

Nicholas Lopez: Breaking News
Misses out on Opening Day roster
The Rockies reassigned Lopez to minor-league camp Sunday. Lopez had been vying for a utility spot on the Rockies' Opening Day roster but won't break camp with the big club after posting a .695 OPS across 48 plate appearances in Cactus League play. Unless the Rockies grant him his release to pursue opportunities elsewhere, the 31-year-old infielder is expected to open the season at Triple-A Albuquerque.
Nets NRI deal with Rockies
The Rockies signed Lopez to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training Monday, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports. Lopez spent most of the 2025 season in the minors but did see action in 18 games between the Cubs and Angels, going just 1-for-24 at the plate. Most of Lopez's experience is at second base, and the Rockies have an opening at that position, but if the 30-year-old manages to crack the Opening Day roster, it will likely be in a reserve infielder role.
