A 45-year-old serial horse rapist from Texas has been arrested again after he was found in a barn with a broken leg.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that Cirilo Castillo Jr. was “trespassing in the barn again and trying to perform a sexual act with a horse, when it kicked him causing injury.”

Castillo was arrested Tuesday on charges stemming from the February incident, the sheriff’s office said. He has been arrested and convicted multiple times over the past several years on charges related to sexual acts with horses, according to court records.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Castillo Told Police He Injured His Leg in a Car Accident

When Cirilo Castillo was found inside the barn on February 17, he told police he had been struck by a car on a nearby road, and crawled to the barn in rural Edinburg for shelter. But sheriff’s investigators believe he was kicked by the horse when he tried to have sex with it.

The woman who owns the barn told police she went to feed her horses and found Castillo on the ground in one of the horse stables. “She immediately identified the injured male as a suspect who was previously arrested for having sex with her horses,” the sheriff’s office said.

Castillo had been warned to stay away from the barn and the horses after his prior arrests.

He was charged on a warrant for criminal trespass, a misdemeanor, and held on $1,000 bail.

2. The Horse Is Not the Same One He Had Sex With in 2013, the Sheriff’s Office Says

The sheriff’s office told the McAllen Monitor that the horse that kicked Castillo was not the same one he had sex with multiple times in 2013.

Castillo was sentenced to five years of probation on the cruelty to animals charged after tying a horse to her corral at the same barn where the latest incident happened, and then performing oral and vaginal sex on her, The Monitor reports.

He had been released from jail on animal cruelty charges for having sex with the same horse not long before the 2013 incident, the Houston Chronicle reported.

3. The Sheriff Said After Castillo’s 2013 Arrest: ‘We Have a Hell of a Surveillance Tape’

In July 2013, Castillo was caught on a security camera the barn’s owner set up after Castillo kept going after the same mare, Nadia, the San Antonio Express-News reported at the time.

“We have a hell of a surveillance tape,” former Sheriff Lupe Trevino told the newspaper. “It is not going to go to, ‘America’s Funniest Videos,’ that is for sure.”

He said Castillo, a laborer with previous arrests on theft and marijuana charges, clearly needed some kind of treatment.

“The guy is practically harmless, except for the horse,” Trevino told the Express-News. “I can’t just ignore this and allow it to keep happening.”

The video showed the horse trying to move away from Castillo as he performed the sex acts on her, according to The Monitor.

4. He Was Also Arrested in 2012 on Charges Related to Alleged Sexual Acts With a Horse

Castillo was sentenced to 270 days in jail in 2012 on a public lewdness conviction related to having sex with a horse, according to The Monitor.

“He is going to continue to do this,” Trevino told KGBT in 2013. “The people there in the neighborhood are just sick and tired of it. We just need to do something with this.”

5. There Is No Law Against Bestiality in Texas

Texas does not have a law against bestiality, the sheriff’s office said. In his previous cases, Castillo was charged with cruelty to animals, as deputies said they determined the animal was injured in the sexual assaults.

Bestiality is legal in 13 states and the District of Columbia, though a bill to outlaw sexual acts with animals has been approved by the New Jersey legislature and is awaiting the signature of Governor Chris Christie, according to The Trentonian.

The other states that allow bestiality are: Hawaii, Kentucky, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming.

At least one group in Texas is fighting for tougher bestiality and animal cruelty laws, spurred on by a video that alleges a dog was sexually abused, according to Fox 51.

“It just clicked in my head that there has to be something we can do about it, there has to be someway to reach out to lawmakers to have laws changed,” Tonya Allison told the news station. “I have two little girls and my thought are, if he is doing this to this animal could a child be next?”
