Emhoff’s Venable bio notes that he focuses on “complex commercial, media, advertising, entertainment and intellectual property litigation matters” and is “experienced in defending class action matters concerning claims of unfair business practices, the validity of advertising and marketing claims, cases challenging privacy statutes and wage and hour violations.”

Before joining Venable, Emhoff was a partner at his own firm, Whitwell Jacoby Emhoff LLP. He also worked at Belin Rawlings & Badal, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP and Bingham McCutchen LLP.

In October 2016, the Sacramento Bee reported that Harris and Emhoff released their 2015 tax returns. The documents showed that the couple earned $1.17 million in 2015 and paid nearly $450,000 in state and federal income taxes.

The documents also showed that the couple donated $32,947 to charity, including $10,000 to UNICEF alone. The Bee reports that their effective tax rate was 40 percent combined.

The 2015 tax return was their second joint filing since their wedding. Harris earned $158,775 a year as the California Attorney General.

4. Emhoff Says His Toughest Case Involved an Orange County Con Man

In a 2011 interview with Law360, Emhoff said that one of the toughest cases he ever had involved an Orange County, California con man who stole millions of dollars from Midwestern investors. The man was convicted.

“Along with obtaining a judgment against the felon, we brought a claim against a prominent national bank for allowing the overseas transfer of funds from my client’s account without the proper approvals,” Emhoff explained.

He also described the case as a “classic example of David versus Goliath” since it happened before he joined Venable.

“The matter was heavily contested and went all the way to trial before it ultimately settled several weeks into the trial,” Emhoff told Law360. “Another challenging aspect of this case involved contending with a very upset group of clients that were put in an extremely precarious financial situation. Despite these obstacles, the clients were happy with the outcome. Over the years I’ve stayed in touch with these clients, as well as the former litigator, who became a judge.”
